Security Six Ankle Carry?

Hi all. I'm new here.

Just got a Ruger Security Six 2 3/4" barrell and I'd like to ankle carry. Is this too large of a gun to ankle carry? I'm 6'4" 260 lbs. - I wouldn't mind the extra weight. I've had trouble finding an ankle holster that seems to be good enough quality and that will hold this gun.

I did find one that looks good - the Bianchi 4750 Ranger Triad Ankle Holster but it doesn't appear that they make one that hold the Security Six. The 19744 model holds the S&W 19 2" and the S&W 60. A Bianchi rep told me that model 19746 holds a "Colt Officer's ACP" with a 3 1/4" barrell but I have no idea how close in size this is to the Security Six.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Cool forum.

That seems like a gun thats a little too heavy for an ankle gun. If it was me I'd use a S&W 642 or scandium 357 mag.

I've got a 642 its a great gun. I'm comfortable with the 38+P but I know others aren't.

Holsters are going to be a problem because these guns were never considered an ankle gun and they've been out of production a long time.

Like carrying a brick on your ankle

The Security Six, even with 2-3/4" bbl, is rather large for ankle carry - - It weighs about as much as the S&W M19 2-1/2" - - about 31 oz.

The S&W M36 Chief's Special, a J-frame revolver, at 19 oz., is about the heaviest I'd want to ankle-pack. I like the 14 oz. M37 Airweight Chief's far better for such a use.
The 19744 model holds the S&W 19 2" and the S&W 60.
Hummm - - The Sec Six will probably fit into most holsters that hold the M19. The M60 is a good deal smaller - - Just a stainless M36.

I really believe you'd be more comfortable with a good waist holster, either IWB or outside the belt. I like the Bianchi Minimalist belt slide model.

Best of luck

NO !!!
I think you will find a Security Six to be too heavy and too bulky for comfortable wear.
Some say this is a little bulky but, a 2 1/4 inch Ruger SP-101 in .357 Magnum might work.

I have exactly the same model and barrel size of Security Six, and in my opinion, it would be far too heavy and large for ankle carry, unless you have ankles the diameter of a medium-sized tree. And that brings up another point.

I do a lot of hiking, snowshoeing and biking, and have pretty muscular calves. But my ankles are relatively skinny. I have found very, very few ankle holsters that will stay up for any length of time before sliding down around my foot. So while I think the concept of ankle carry is great, the actual application, at least for me, is still awaiting the perfect stay-up, non-slip holster. Do let me know if you have any ideas in this regard.

Thanks Guys...

Based on your comments I've decided against ankle carry for this gun. I just purchased an IWB holster and will carry that way. Now I have to decide what I want to carry for my BUG. I'll try ankle carry with that. The Ranger Triad Ankle Holster looks like a good one for a BUG.

Thanks for your help!! :)

p.s a colt officers ACP is a semi auto 1911 style 45 semi auto pistol. Apples and oragnes to your revolver. I was proboly mentioned because it's also a somewhat large gun. I'd consider a S&W J frame in 357 r Ruger SP 101. You'll find these much easier to ankle carry and a host ofholsters to carry them in. ( Especially true for the S&W)

I'll second the recommendation for the S&W J frame for ankle carry. I just picked up an older model 36 for a CCW and it is very comfortable in an ankle rig. Just need to have a pair of pants that are loose around the ankle or the gun is a b***h to get at.. IMHO an Sp101 is pushing the size limit for reasonable ankle carry, that said my next revolver purchase will probably be a SP

I find the 642/442 is the perfect ankle gun (i know ti's are lighter but I'm not big on them)....here is my 442 in a Renegade ankle holster....the strap is a pull thru design, so you only use the snap to put the gun in....super comfortable rig...it never moves around once in place due to the wide elaastic band....and since there isn't a molded holster, it has a smaller footprint than most rigs....you can wear this with straight leg jeans and still get at it easily...

I've tried the Bianchi ankle rig with a Colt Detective before and it won't work for me with jeans. I'm sure my leg is much smaller than yours though so it could work for you.
My BUG is a Beretta Tomcat which I carry in a Kramer pocket holster. Only tipoff is it appears I have two wallets. I've thought about an ankle holster for it and probally is about as big as I could go in one.
I have a retired LEO friend that carried a lightweight J frame in an ankle holster daily during his working career. He's slightly smaller than you but it worked for him with his uniform trousers. He pocket carries that same gun now as his only gun.
