Security idea I use on pawnshop.

Just reading a thread on storing ammo in a locked fridge and discussion on whether that would create a bomb.

Just for those of you who have alarms, you may be interested in what I do. Several stores use bars and other rigid things to secure a door. Since the alarm contacts are on the door, a bar increases the force necessary to break it down whereupon the alarm will go off.

I do a different thing. I use steel outer doors (but wood will do the same) BUT I do not use a bar. I use a stout short chain.

That way, if the door is forced or pried, the crooks think they are in.....BUT.....whoops, there is the chain to work on and it has allowed the door to open and the alarm to go. Presto. More time needed but the alarm has been triggered.

Try it. You will like it.

Yes - but that gap will give the crooks room to work.. cut the chain, break or pry the door... Etc...
I heard that the VIPER car alarm was good on those steel doors as it works from vibration instead of breaking a circut.
This was just overheard - I dont know nuttin about either...

I thought that building a spring loaded jam into the floor and ceiling behind the door would be an ideal solution. It would allow the door to open an inch, but they'd never break the jams. They'd have to disassemble the door to get in at that point.

If they want in, they will be in. But if you saw the chain, AND the small space to work in, that extra time WITH THE ALARM GOING will send em on their way.

Local pawn shop owner shared a little security secret with me:

He keeps a 1 pound bottle of black powder in his safe. Seems that there was a rash of pawn shop robberies in which the thieves rammed a stolen tow truck through the front door, bars and all (this would defeat the alarm and bar system you're discussing) and quickly wrapped the winch cable around the safe. They would then drive off down the road before the alarm could be responded to, all the while whinching the safe into the air - no marks on the gound to follow.

My friend's security measure was more an act of revenge than it was a preventative. It seems the thieves, thinking that they had gotten away scott-free, would then cut open the safe with a cutting torch.

Imagine: Heavy steel safe + Black powder + cutting torch........... Nasty. :D
