Security Guard/ Police Officer Handgun

I am going into the Police Academy in 2013, and am recently a certified Security Guard. I do not have my Exposed Firearm Licence yet, but I will be getting it soon.

The police force in my town authorizes police officers to carry their own purchased and registered handgun, as long as it is a .40 cal pistol. As well as if I can find a Security Company that will allow me to carry my own purchased and registered handgun permitting a .40 cal pistol. Here is my question. What in your mind is the best .40 cal pistol to use?

I have been looking at a Glock 22 40.cal pistol. But I have noticed some "not so safe" problems with the gun.

1- There is not safety on the exterior of the gun. I do understand that it has a three independent safety mechanisms to make sure it does not discharge accidently. But it does not have a "safety switch" on the exterior of the gun.

2- The recoil spring assembly is jumping over the ridge on the plastic tube. This is a major problem if you are using your gun for self defence or in general use.

In your opinion, what is the best quality .40 cal handgun that will not jam, break and most important, HAVE A EXTERIOR SAFETY!

Any and all help will be greatly appreciated!

The best safety money can buy and the one anyone should posses is the one between you ears which is the one safety switch on the exterior of the gun:eek:

I'll actually be pretty surprised if you find a security company that will let you carry you choice of weapon. My experience is only with some of the bigger companies but generally speaking they're very strict with the rules for the armed guards, and most were issued revolvers in 38 special

There's nothing wrong with the Glock 22.
It's the model carried by more law enforcement agencies than any other Glock model.

Having said that, I would go with something slightly smaller.
The Glock 23....

Consider a CZ,,,

A friend of mine was in the same dilemma as you,,,
The security company he works for has them buy their own handguns.

He tried my CZ-75B and liked it,,,
He ended up buying the satin nickel version for his use.

Just a thought.

The Springfield XD guns have a grip safety (similar to a 1911) for a little extra peace of mind. I can't comment on their quality/reliability though.

When i worked for a armored truck company servicing atm machines we carried our own guns. I chose a m&p45 on the hip and a keltec p11 in my boot. The security company i work for now issues us a glock22. If i were in your shoes i would buy whatever it is police department you are gonna work for issues that way come the academy you will already have a headstart on the pistol range.

There aren't any handguns that won't ever jam or break.

As has already been noted Glock's don't need an external safety to be safe.

Being safe with a Glock is really very simple, don't pull the trigger and it won't fire.

2BQ945,

While the Glocks have no external safety you can get a NY-1 trigger and up the pull to 8 lbs or so. Then get a good holster that covers the trigger guard.

Now the H&K is a fine gun. Has a safety. I think the S&W M&P has a version with an external safety to.

All of them are about as reliable as a handgun can be made and any of them, including the Glock, will do fine.

I am baffled by what you're trying to say.

I think he's refering to guns like the 92fs. on a 92, the barrel extends past the slide and if pressed on, the gun won't fire. So in a struggle if you were to grab the front of a 92, you can render it useless until the operator pulls it away from you.

Thank you everyone for the help!

After all the shared thoughts and information, I think I am going to go with the Glock 22 and/or the Springfield XD.

Thanks everyone!!!

The S&W M&P is available with an optional safety, and the FN FNP & FNX have safeties.

If it doesn't have to be new, take a look at a police trade-in S&W 4003 or 4006. These are high-quality all-metal guns that are built like tanks and are very cheap right now because police departments are dumping them. The 4003 is the lighter alloy-frame version, which will probably be more pleasant to carry on duty. The similar 9mm 5903 and 5906 are more common with surplus dealers at the moment, but many of the .40S&W guns are out there if you know where to look. BTW, did I mention that CDNN is currently selling surplus 4006 mags for the princely sum of only $9.99 each?

If the police departments are getting rid of them, does that mean that there is a problem or are they just improving to a better weapon?

Because many police depts have guns given to them by manufacturers for next to nothing. And if you've had a gun for 15 years, why the heck not take the latest/greatest upgrade if you get a great deal?

Often they look worn a little, but are perfectly functional and have often been shot little.

To the OP: My vote is for the S&W M&P .40 with the thumb safety. You can also choose a mag disconnect, or not, if you wish.

Or how about a used Sig?

Or an H&K?

I'd look at what the local departments are issuing or authorizing. I'm not a big fan of Glock... but you cant go wrong with one. I wonder is the mandatory safety your requirement? Or that of the local police departments? My department requires no manually released safety, but a heavy trigger pull.

I have 6 Glocks with thousands of thousands of rounds through them. I have never had a failure due to the plastic on the spring slipping or anything else due to the spring... I wouldn't worry about that. Glocks are a time tested proven platform; they won't let you down (aside from a few of the early Gen4 19s and 17s... but Glock will fix that free of charge).

My recommendations for a duty weapon that I had to bet my life on in .40:

Glock 22
M&P40 Pro
FNX40

(CZ75 SP01 may make the list eventually as well I just don't have enough rounds through it yet to recommend yet but it looks promising...)
