SecuRAM vs. S&G e-locks?

Ive never heard of SecuRAM electronic locks, and see them on some of the safes at Bass Pro Shop. Ive seen them on different models of RedHead safes, however, I also see S&G locks on other RedHead safes.

Can anyone give a recommendation on the pro's and con's on these two locks?

Im currently looking at a RedHead (Granite serial number on the back and Granite manual inside) safe that supposedly holds 12/24 guns and is 59 x 28 x 22. It is "rated" at 1 HR @1200. The specific model of lock it has is an ECSL-0601A, by SecuRAM.

The safe has a price point of $650.

Many of the electronic locks that you will see on a gun safe are made in China. Securam is a newer player, and is also Chinese. They use a swingbolt design similar to the LaGard, which tends to be a more reliable design in my experience.

It's not an expensive lock, but should work well in residential use.
 
So after I went back to Bass Pro Shop, I found out they are not going to carry this safe any longer, and it is the last one. It is the display model with no scratches. They did say they would take $30 off of the $650 price since it was a floor model. I still need to get to the bottom of the warranty issue. Some RedHead safes with Granite Safe serial numbers come with lifetime warranties, and this one, only comes with a 5 year warranty from Granite with the option to buy up to a 10 year for an extra $100. I wasnt aware that they had multiple types of warranties.

Should I feel good about this price, $620 for this size of safe? However, I did not see any stickers about UL ratings. Come to think of it, I didnt see any UL stickers on any of the RedHead safes at Bass Pro Shop.

So because of the 5 year warranty and the lack of UL rating, would all of you feel comfortable buying this safe at this price point?

Here are the documents Granite Safe sent me regarding their warranty. This is before I inquired about the 5 year found with this safe. I have yet to get an answer.

As you can see from the picture of the fire rating and serial number, there is nothing about a UL rating. This is the only sticker on the safe.

The only UL rating that you see on most gun safes is the RSC tag, which means very little. To my knowledge, there are no gun safes on the market with a UL fire rating.

Also keep in mind that the warranty on the safe is just for the safe. The lock is not part of the safe since it was supplied by a third party and installed by the manufacturer.
 
So I got a hold of Granite Safe today, and they sent me an updated warranty card for the safe. The one that was in it was outdated. They used to only offer 5 year warranties on some of their smaller safes, but have now changed it to the normal limited lifetime that you commonly see with most safes.

They have also included an option to warranty the lock itself for 9 extra years (normally 1 year), for an additional $50.

I went ahead an purchased the safe, and feel good about it.

What is everyone's thought on the extra $50 for the lock warranty? Worth it?

I might purchase it since that is normally what goes wrong.

Does that warranty pay to drill and repair the safe in the event of a failure, or do they just send you a replacement lock?

I'm assuming they just send you a lock, and you're still on the hook for the most expensive part.
 
Dunno, it doesnt say. I have fired off an email to them asking for clarification and details.

Your new safe comes with a limited lifetime warranty against defects in materials and
workmanship. The mechanical or electronic lock is covered by a 1 year warranty against defects
in materials and workmanship.

You can extend your warranty coverage for $50.00 which will include the following coverage:

1. EXTENDED LOCK COVERAGE: 9 extra years coverage (10 years total) on the
mechanical or electronic lock installed on your safe.


2. FREE COMBINATION SEARCH: If your combination is lost or misplaced,
you will receive FREE combination searches for 10 years after purchase date.
Normal cost for a combination search is $25.00


To acquire your extended warranty, simply fill out all the information below. Make sure to
include the serial number of the safe. The serial number is located on the right front of the safe
down by the ground and also on the back of the safe. You can pay by filling out the credit card
information or sending a check/money order for the amount. Make sure to keep a copy for your

All costs, including drilling and all other locksmith charges. It will be zero dollars to you.

Of course they are. Securam is a budget lock that still has a UL rating. It's hard to make money selling $400 safes with $200 locks on them. I think you'll start seeing them (and others like them) on many of the lower priced safes.
 
The failure rate of our products are better than all other electronic manufacturers. SecuRam lock failure rate is LESS than 1%. Competitors lock failure rates are 2%-3%.

When it comes down to dependability I personally put a high value on testing which is what we pride ourselves on as well. We put our products through extensive testing.
