Secretary of the Interior appointment -- fight it

I realize this is a BAD time to ring the alarm bell, but we gotta act FAST. My emphasis in bold.

(Update: It took me seven minutes to contact all the people below (bless cut and paste). :) )

While on the surface it is mostly a Western concern, I am calling on the Brothers throughout the Union to oppose this guy Sullivan. The present Secretary (Babbitt) has been a tree hugger's dream -- closing off land to off-road vehicles, hunters and fishermen. Sullivan appears only slightly better. Please take a few minutes and contact these people.

This from the Nevada State Rifle and Pistol Association:

"Please do what you can as the appointment for the Interior secretary is very important. He/she will be the boss of the Dir. of BLM and as such will have a lot to say on land use and how "Draconian" BLM does or does not get with various regulations.

Since G. W. Bush is wasting no time in putting his administration together, we should not waste any time in contacting his team and the others who might help. Contact this e-mail address to give them your view point: advice@bushcheneytransition.com.

ALERT!!! Without IMMEDIATE action, we will lose the Secretary of the Interior to a Democrat who supported Gore for President. Unless we can stop him, on Tuesday, President Bush will announce that Mike Sullivan, past Governor of Wyoming as the next Secretary of the Interior. Governor Sullivan is a Democrat who supported Gore for President.

Although conservative for a democrat, Sullivan is likely to keep many of Babbitt's appointees in Interior. For example, Sullivan is likely to appoint fellow democrat Karpan as Chief of Staff. Kathy is a very liberal democrat who currently serves as Babbitt's Director of Office of Surface Mining. The point of electing Bush was to get the Babbitt crowd OUT of Interior, not keep them there.

You did a great job opposing the John Turner appointment as Secretary of Interior; we need that same effort again.

The next on the Interior Secretary short list is Senator Ben Nighthorse Campbell from Colorado, Senator Craig Thomas from Wyoming and Senator Slade Gorton from Washington. Any of these three would be wonderful Interior Secretaries and would get rid of the current Babbitt appointments. Tell the Bush/Cheney that Republicans elected Bush and a
Republican should be Secretary of the Interior.

To help, please phone, e mail and fax to the following:

(When the Wyoming Governor and Congressional delegation called to object to the Sullivan appointment, they were told that they were the ONLY ones who opposed the Sullivan nomination. (Gentlemen, man your keyboards and phones - Oatka) The Wyoming Governor and Congressional Delegation need to know that they are not alone so that
they can pass your opposition along to Bush/Cheney. Out-of-state opposition will help)

BLM wants to classify mountain bikes in the same category as off-road vehicles.

UPDATE:

Gun owners and fishermen aren't the only ones getting screwed by the environmentalists and their government allies. Here's a perfect example of the Babbitt crowd's rulings, as well as another place for your input (Last paragraph).

"Bisson said that the proposal reflected the will of the thousands of people . . .". Sound off folks, or they'll hear only the treehuggers.

BLM eyes new limits on bicycles
By Jim Hughes, Denver Post Staff Writer

Mountain bikes could be managed in the same category as sport utility vehicles and motorcycles on Bureau of Land Management land, if a draft plan for that agency's National Off-Highway Vehicle Management Strategy is approved.

The plan is designed to address the growing volume of off-road recreation and to keep off-road enthusiasts from hurting environmentally sensitive areas on BLM lands, said Henri Bisson, the agency's assistant director for renewable resources and planning.

But mountain bikers say they fear the new designation could force the closure of trails on which they are currently allowed to ride.

"I don't think mountain bikes do nearly as much damage as most off-road vehicles," said Chris Ethridge, a mountain biker and owner of the Great Adventure Sports ski and bike shop in Breckenridge. "I definitely consider it different, just like we consider cross-country skis different than snowmobiles."

Already, mountain bikes are barred - along with all other "machines" - from designated wilderness areas. Ethridge said he supports that rule but worries about such bans spreading into non-wilderness areas under BLM management.

With the Forest Service also taking a second look at mountain bikes as it puts together a new management plan for the White River National Forest surrounding Breckenridge, Ethridge wondered if mountain bikers were being squeezed out by two federal agencies.

"I'm all for keeping mountain bikes out of the wilderness," he said. "People are looking for a quiet wilderness experience out there. But I don't think they should really limit the use of mountain bikes in the rest of the area. There is pretty limited access where mountain bikers can go already."

Tim Blumenthal, executive director of the International Mountain Bicycling Association in Boulder, said he was surprised to hear that the BLM was considering lumping mountain bikes in with all-terrain vehicles and sport utility vehicles.

"We have worked as partners with the BLM for a decade to carefully manage mountain biking," Blumenthal said. "This plan is not consistent with that partnership."

Bisson said that the proposal reflected the will of the thousands of people who have weighed in on his agency's off-road vehicle planning process.

"The public submitted nearly 5,000 written comments that 10 BLM specialists have been categorizing and analyzing since September," he said. "These comments have guided our agency in writing this draft strategy."

More information on the BLM's National Off-Highway Vehicle Management Strategy, including information on how to register a comment, can be found online at http://www.blm.gov/ohv/index.htm. The public comment period for this plan closes Jan. 3.

I really hope it's not true, but Dubya sounds like as much of a sell-out and compromiser as dad was. Still, the better of 2 evils for this election.

OK, heres my quick comment to advice@bushcheneytransition.com:

To those of you on the GOP transition team for President Bush:

It is my understanding that former Wyoming governor Mike Sullivan is being considered for the post of Secretary of the Interior. It is also my understanding that his support of property rights and responsible public use of public lands has been lacking in the past. For the past 8 years citizens in western states have suffered abuse at federal seizure of private lands, and restrictions of the use of public lands at the hands of Mr. Babbitt and the Clinton administration. I would like to encourage you to nominate an individual for this position that would provide sound management of federal lands and listen to input from citizens directly effected by those actions. By what limited reports I have come across, that is not Mike Sullivan.

I would urge you to consider Senator Slade Gorton, or perhaps Helen Chenowoth-Hague, representative from Idaho, were she to consider this position.

Thank you for your consideration.

Brian Dunham
Coeur d’Alene, Idaho

ps, Helen Chenoworth would be great-the hard-core tree huggers would drop dead at the thought of it!!

Before advocating the appointment of a Republican Senator to the position of Sec'y/Int, count noses in the Senate.

While we don't want Sullivan, we can't afford to lose even one Republican Senator!

Here in Idaho, our representative stepped down after committing to limit her self to only 3 terms (replaced with another Republican). Slade Gorton was defeated in WA. Either would be a good choice.

Bri

Art,

If a sitting senator is chosen, it will be from a state that has a Republican governor, so that another Republican senator can be appointed to replace the outgoing one. ;)

Someone told me earlier today that Ben Nighthorse Campbell is at the top of Bush's list for Interior. I hope that he is right.

Joe

I'm certainly not against Campbell, but can the Colorado governor be trusted? He ran for election as pro-gun, but has supported gun-control garbage, right? Maybe the risks inherent in national-level politics would keep him "in the fold".

(I'm thoroughly fed up with weasels and turncoats.)
