I know that a lot of TFL'ers know of Col. David H. Hackworth, USA, Ret. He can be found at http://www.hackworth.com
I believe that he would make a great Secretary of the Army, one who would rebuild our army.
If any of you agree on this please contact your congresspeople and get them on the bandwagon.

There is a rumor going around Dallas that Roger Staughbach (sp) is being considered for Secetary of the Navy.

Hackworth

Yeah...Hackworth would go over like a lead Balloon. Hackworth hates West Pointers (One thing I agree with him about). West Pointers run the Army.

Want to know why the Marines are generally more ready and better trained than the Army. The jarheads are not run by West Pointers.

PS I apologize to any Graduates of West Point whom I have offended with the above post (but it is factually correct).

While I, too, think Col. Hackworth would make a worthy choice because of his "warrior" mindset and leadership qualities, I am afraid G.W. and his SecDef will likely choose someone of fewer years. For Col. Hackworth being in his seventies probably shouldn't be a disqualification, but others may not think so.

Even in his seventies, he's probably tougher than a lot of us and a lot of the ground pounders they are putting out of Basic these days.

He was on TV this morning saying we should have only one ground force. He suggested we achieve this by abolishing the Army and depending on the Marine Corps. That won't make him popular with the Army.
He also says we should abolish the Air Force.

Yes...His appointment would really PO some senior officers. On the other hand anybody who knows or still remembers actual combat probably would agree that Col Hackworth believes in training, building capability and morale a whole lot more than Cohen et al. There would be no more peacekeeping and meal delivery unless they sent the peaceniks or the Red Cross.

I can still hope.

Hackworth is in his seventies? I thought warfare was supposed to age people.

He, like many that we would like to see in Washington, has a lot of things going against him:

1. He doesn't have Washington "bubble hair." To make it, you have to have your hair parted on one side and combed over your forehead ala Lott, Gephardt, Newt, Al, GW, ad nauseam.

2. He speaks his mind. In DC, you can only speak in nuances.

3. He's right.

Dick

I can see it now:

"Sir, what will your fisrt official act as Secretary of the Army be?"

"I'm abolishing it and retiring. Now leave me alone."

:D
