i slipped  putting the slide release in my springfield loaded and put a light scratch in the slide.its a stainless gun. is there a way to get it out

I used 400 and 600 grit sand paper GENTLY and IN LINE with the "grain" of my stainless frame to make the scratch disappear. By alternating the two grits carefully I was able to match the grain/finish/appearance of my pistol.

Sometimes a "Scotchbrite" will do a creditable job disguising a scratch on stainless if the original finish is a "brush" or "semi-brush" type. There are varying grades of courseness ranging from white to green to red.

On a high polish stainless finish, try looking around for some Micromesh finishing cloths which you can get from 2400 to 12000 grit. We used Micromesh for polishing the passenger windows on the fleet of the airlines I used to work for. It also worked great for polishing the crystal on my watch and for polishing brass and stainless steel gun parts.:D

Try a Norton Bear-tex pad 6" x 9" micro-fine gray. You can get these through
grainger or perhaps online. They are like a scotch brite and work quite well especially if you can lay the pad out on a flat surface and run the part across in the direction of the grain. I got a scratch on slide of my springfield 1911 and it worked quite well, in my case I put a light coat of oil on the pad.

Hope this helps
