Scout rifle scope mounts

Gentleman,
I am fixing to have a mauser converted into a scout in 30.06. Will use a Choate camo stock. I thought I'd go with a stepped barrel in military contour in order to make scope mounting(drilling and tapping) easier. Do any of you have any specific suggestions on the scope mount and rings to purchace for this barrel? Will use a Burris Scout scope. Thank you.

I had a .30-06 stepped barrel from Springfield Sporters in the 90's and it was like new from Columbia- never met an action=> until I got a Columbian action from them to match- new as well. It was a fine platform for a custom rifle and I made a scout and practically gave it away...

In my foolish enthusiasm, I cut the barrel to about 20" after my gunsmith screwed it on and polished the whole thing. Standard military front sight remounted, bolt was welded straight down. I ended up using Plinktons Rust Blue on it and getting decent but not great results.

A Thompson Center Contender mount fit the first step (about 1" dia.) perfectly and mounted the Burris 3x without problems.

Now, I am interested in making a weaver quarter rail which extends over the front ring out to the standard quarter ramp area serving as both a scout mount and a front ring base. On the rear ring, I'd like an appropriate height base with an adjustable ghost peep. It appears Ashley is taking up the idea with an adustable peep on a weaver mount (right now for Remington only). In this way, you can mount any optics from a scout scope to standard scope to a Reflex II or something- whatever is on hand...

I'm going back to the idea of the practical carbine. A 20" barreled intermediate length Mauser action in .308 with the above sight setup and a short wood stock with a rounded metal butt. I might use the Ching sling concept but with a barrel band for the first position.

Clinton Coates home page has some good information.

I've used the Burris Scout Scope mount. Some careful time with a dremmel tool and some machinest dye and you should be able to make the mount youself. Only one hole is then required as it uses Remington Rear Sight Spacing. Only works on remingtons though.

You can also try the Scout Mount B-Square put out. It uses the rear sight holes and front reciever ring holes.

For your gun, try this mount: B-Square Mauser Mount

Or this one: Ashley Scout Mount
