Bought a K.98 action and barrel in 7.62 NATO cheap in 1998. The barrel was good but the exterior was a bit battered , so I bubba-ised it into a Scout rifle with the XS forward rail scope mount, cut the barrel to 18 inches, Timney trigger etc. I've put 1500 rounds through it since then. Best group, three into 1.5 inches at 100 yards. The mount is very secure and solid. Holds zero with the Burris Scout scope very well. All in all very, pleased with it.
I previously had that scope on an other wise stock Israeli Mauser with B Square Scout Mount. This just my experience but I found the B square unsatisfactory. Very fiddly to mount, hard to zero and the threads need care to avoid stripping. Marked it off to experience and that rifle now has Mojo's.
Also have a Nikko Sterling long eye relief scope on a Yugoslav 7.92 K98. This is fitted with an SK scout mount which I found very solid and satisfactory.
The XS system is excellent but permanent. If you want to be able to return the rifle to stock, no gunsmithing, I would go SK.
Hope this helps.
