scout Enfield

I'm planning on putting an IER scope, and shortening the barrel, on my old .303. What would be the best barrel length? should I go minimum legal length?

AFAIK, at 19", recoil and muzzle blast will be quite impressive... I would not suggest going below 20", but what's an inch difference?
I am currently part-time involved in such a project, so keep us up to date on its development, please!

I built one.

I wouldn't go below 19". Muzzle blast is fierce.
To see details and pictures pf my Enfield Scout go to http://www.303british.com and look under the thread "Saving a Burnt Out Jungle Carbine"
If you have any questions feel free to email me. IMHO the Enfield is an ideal scout platform!

Love the pix Yaeger . Once I get a stock, I'm sending it off to get a Ching ring installed. Are iron sights "required" on a scout? I was thinking on going with just a Leupold Scout M8.

Thanks. They are not required but if you are using a #4 type action you'd be crazy not to include them. I LOVE those sights!

Enfield "Battle Scout"....

Hello. A few years ago, I got a brand new, unfired Enfield No.4 MkII for a decent price. Before firing a shot, I took it to my gunsmith and had the following done.

1. Cut bbl to 20" and recrown.

2. Install a Williams front sight compatable with the "battle" peep on the rear ladder sight.

3. Do a trigger job and install a stop.

4. Mount a Leupold 2X pistol scope on the bbl. This was done with a mount attached to the rear, thickest portion of the bbl.

5. Black parkerize the gun.

Certainly, this exceeds Col. Cooper's weigh limit and the caliber is not .308, but it's a pretty darned neat little repeater that can be fired accurately faster than some might realize.

With certain handloads, I was pleasantly surprised to get groups of about 1.25 to 1.5" at 100 yards on average. Sometimes, I'd get an inch or less, but usually about 1 1/4".

I don't try to jack this one up on the hot end of the envelope; just enjoy it for what it is. These are neat little rifles.

I called it a "Battle Scout," but whether is truly is or is not doesn't matter; it is a fun gun to shoot.

Best.

I've been thinking about the same project.

For the price you might want to consider getting an Enfield Jungle Carbine type rifle from J&G Sales for $169.95 and going from there.

I know B-Square makes an extended eye relief scope mount that replaces the rear site, but I would like a mount that lets me keep the iron sites in tact.

Quest Extreme II

Recently purchased a Gibbs Rifle Quest Extreme II. Basically a hand picked refurbished No.7 (.308) chromed and new wood. (Could have done without the chrome but it was part of the package.) Very handly little rifle. Have plans to make it into a Scout. Haven't shot it yet and it is snowing outside :(. Comes with one 10 round mag and a scope rail (Weaver) that attaches to the bridge abd front of receiver. It needs some minor grinding to fit it to the receiver which is what I will be doing this weekend. It has a channel that should allow you to use the open sights if necessary. It's a nice looking little piece. Will post pics.

E-mailed Gibbs concerning factory mags and here is their reply :

"Dear Mr. V,

Unfortunately, we have never received any of the 5 round magazines. However, the 10 round mags are available from AcuSport, Jerry's (PA office), and Zanders.

Best regards,

Gibbs Rifle Co."

I had purchased a couple of 10 rounders from J&G but am not sure who manufactured them. The mags pictured in their ad looks a bit different them the stock one.

Man, I really need to improve my photo skills.
