Scotland Most Violent - Call to Control Knives

A UNITED Nations report has labelled Scotland the most violent country in the developed world, with people three times more likely to be assaulted than in America.

England and Wales recorded the second highest number of violent assaults while Northern Ireland recorded the fewest.

The study, based on telephone interviews with victims of crime in 21 countries, found that more than 2,000 Scots were attacked every week, almost ten times the official police figures. They include non-sexual crimes of violence and serious assaults.

Violent crime has doubled in Scotland over the past 20 years and levels, per head of population, are now comparable with cities such as Rio de Janeiro, Johannesburg and Tbilisi. . . .
Detective Chief Superintendent John Carnochan, head of the Strathclyde Police’s violence reduction unit, said the problem was chronic and restricting access to drink and limiting the sale of knives would at least reduce the problem.

The study, by the UN’s crime research institute, found that 3 per cent of Scots had been victims of assault compared with 1.2 per cent in America and just 0.1 per cent in Japan, 0.2 per cent in Italy and 0.8 per cent in Austria. In England and Wales the figure was 2.8 per cent.

I'm sure that after knife control doesn't work, there will be club control, then brick control, and then . . .

Wow! So no more strong drink or pointy things for Scots? Yeah, I'm sure that will solve the problem.

My queries discovered an interesting fact. Senior PCs found 17,048 licensed premises. (bars) There aren't that many PCs in Scotland! The Glasgow licensing chief is Gordon Macdiarmid and he sees no problem. Glasgow reviews policies on safty, nuisance prevention, alcohol-related incidents, security and other issues. After a review, better establishments are awarded "Best Bar None" accreditation. My own experiences in Edinburgh are positive. I think the article is inherently and statistically flawed.

That's really sad. I lived in Edinburgh for about 14 months in 1981-82 and never felt unsafe--even while roaming (parts of)the city at night. The smaller towns I visited were even more tame.

The problem is the worst in western Scotland, I've read. Those damn Highlanders and their "booze and blades" culture.

The Brits were saying that in the 13th century. Apparently the problem can't be solved through social engineering. Common sense ought to tell them the intoxicated fools who bring blades to gun fights are going to come up second-place losers.

Just how many times do we have to disarm the Scots? Man, my people have been disarming those folks for centuries and now I'm told it's not enough? Have to take away their pointy sticks and dig up every rock in Scotland and throw it in the ocean? Geez.

Member of the English yeoman who disarmed the Scottish clans. :)

The most astonishing part of the article is this:

Detective Chief Superintendent John Carnochan, head of the Strathclyde Police’s violence reduction unit, said the problem was chronic and restricting access to drink and limiting the sale of knives would at least reduce the problem.

The head of the Police's violence unit doesn't think that somehow, tougher criminal laws and strict law enforcement and prevention (patrols) could fix the problem. According to him "limiting the sale of knives" would fix the problem. Nice try, John Carnochan. He's blaming his (and his colleagues) incompetence on knives!

In any case, gun control or not, when the officials and governments fail to protect the citizens, its their duty to protect themselves, their families and neighbors. Hence, having guns is the solution when those institutions fail.
We saw that, unfortunately, in New Orleans for a week.

I might point out that the modern Scots problem with crime happens to coincide with chronic joblessness, plummeting educational levels, wealth concentrated in the hands of community outsiders (landed aristocracy, corporations and English), soaring illegitimacy rates and learned helplessness, all worsened by massive government welfare handout programs...just like New Orleans, Chicago and D.C.

After they ban knives what do they ban next? Sticks?

That is so sad that it is outright funny. Banning knives  , you just have to love the mentality that can follow through on that.

Alba Gu Bra!

I'm a damned Highlander thank you very much! :D
