Scoping Marlin 1895 GBL in 45-70

I have recently purchased this rifle and plan to scope it. At the range it will be used, I would prefer to use open sights but my eyes have other notions.

I have done much research and have decide on the Nikon Monarch 1-4 x 20 scope based on what is designed for. I have a rail which will mount directly over the receiver, didn't want to remove the stock sight.

This scope mounted with the approx. 4" eye relief should have it not beyond the hammer which should give my good eye relief without hitting myself in the head with the recoil.

I am still researching the scope mount. Nikon had a one piece cantilever mount advertised but it has only two screws per ring. Is that going to be strong enough to hold the scope? Need help here. Thank you in advance.

There are a lot of mounts that will work. I'd use low Burris Zee rings in Weaver style bases but that is purely personal preference. The DNZ mounts would work very well too.

I DO NOT like anything with dovetails, especially those with windage adjustable rear bases. They are heavy, expensive, difficult to mount, and not particularly strong.

The DNZ are nice in that there is no separate base, the lower half of the rings are made into the base. One less thing to go wrong.

Thank you jmr40

Not familiar with those mounts. I will defiantly look. Thanks for the path.

The reason I was using the rail mount was so I could use one piece ring/base cantilever mount. Your recommendation should work fine.

Thanks again for the response.

The Nikon cantilever mount is made to go on an AR. It puts the scope a lot higher than most guys want on a lever rifle.
If you already have the rail, all you need is a pair of Weaver-style rings. There are plenty to choose from. Burris Zee, Leupold PRW, Weaver Grand Slam, Warne Maxima, others. Low or medium.

Here's my Guide Gun with a Burris scope similar to the Nikon you described. I used Weaver mounts.

The scope had a problem unrelated to the mount or firing so I sent it to Burris for repair. They lost it and ended up replacing it with a slightly different model with a 35mm bell. I like the slightly larger front lens better.

Keep the scope mounted low.

Had a Marlin 95 for decades. Old Weaver steel 3x Post w/crosswire reticle, Weaver rings and mount.

I never had any trouble, but a young friend who shot it did, but then he was a stock crawler. Eyebrows bleed more than most expect! :D

Shooting the factory 405g load is not bad, but when/if you push a 400gr up to 1700-1800, recoil goes UP, significantly. No lever gun has a stock that is optimized for that level of recoil. The Marlin has a nice butt, and you can improve over the factory recoil pad, if you need to. Even one of the ceap slip on pads can make a world of difference in the feel of the recoil.

Does change the LOP, though....And there's nothing you can really do about the jump, that comes from the drop in the stock. You can alter the degree of jump (muzzle brake, etc) but there's always going to be some, unless you come up with a straight line stock for it, at which point it becomes a different beast.

If you are doing heavy loads, DON'T shoot off a bench (unless you've got something for the recoil, like a Lead Sled, or similar).

Don't shoot prone, unless you are a serious masochist, and have good medical coverage. Shoot from a solid field position, sitting, kneeling or standing. IF you aren't good with these, PRACTICE!!!

Shooting a heavy recoiling rifle from the standard low bechrest will teach you why its a poor idea very quickly.

IF you want to get the best you can for accuracy from a heavy recoiling rifle, you need a high bench. One where you can use the bench standing up.

Found myself with same problem last fall. Ohio passed new rifle season and all
legal guns were being scalped as much as 1000%. Out of all the hunting rifles
I own, a Marlin 95 was only Ohio legal gun. I had that old JM 95 fo many years.
I had Lyman 66 reciever sight on it. I learned to shoot it well. Ohio rifle season
is announced, I put Burris 3x9 FF on it. I don't like scope on it, nothing wrong
with scope, Lyman sight going back on. Had to sight in at 60 yds for practical
shooting in this area.

I have a 1-4 on my 1895. Have you bought the Monarch yet. I recently bought, and then sent back for a refund a monarch 1-4. The scope was awful optically and it had very little low light abilities.
