Putting together 3 new rifles, any comments or suggestions would be welcome, especially on the optics. I don't have much experience with optics so feel free to make suggestions on better, or cheaper items. One thing I don't like on the Leupold is that it costs more than the rifle, I want a mil. dot but they all seem to be very expensive so the leupold is probably worth the extra cash. Is the illuminated worth it, or is it just one more thing to go wrong?

Short Range/Carbine
Bushmaster AR 15 16" Barrel
Trijicon Reflex II 12.5MOA Triangle $250 + mount

Medium Range/Multipurpose
Springfield M1A
6x40 1" tube, .308 Government Reticle $300 + mount

Long Range/Sniper
Remington 700VS .308
Leupold Vari-X III 3.5-10x40mm Long Range M3 Illuminated Mil. Dot Reticle (matte) $750 + mount

Looks like you have some good choices.
I would look at the Aimpiont Mil Spec Red Dot and the the mount where you can use the iron sites through the scope
http://www.swfa.com/riflescopes/aimpoint/index.html on the AR15
I am putting a 4x16x40MM on my M1A and that should get out as far as I can ever see. Now I said see, not like I could hit what I was looking at

Good Luck, I am still debating what to put on my BM VMatch 16 inch barrel. But I am told it is a totally different rifle than the shorty but needs optics.

Don't bother with the illuminated "wart"
The M1 has better adjustment than the M3 but taller knobs to get knocked around if you're into abusing your hardware. The M3 is 1/2 MOA adj. on elevation, that's a bit rough for target shooting. This year's M4 Leupold has the reticle etched on the glass for what it's worth...(yeah about > $1200!!)

Good choice on the AR, but for the M1A I'd go for a 4x or even 3x long eye relief or just save your money and go iron sight. It's durable and free.

And don't forget to include a
Ruger 10/22 with a suppressor and a Aries MK238 Night Vision Rifle Scope by AMTc http://www.aimdiscount.com/AMT238.html

Personally, I belong to the school that holds that all else being equal a quality scope on a less expensive rifle will perform better than a quality rifle with a less expensive scope. I've got a rifle, and scope combo that cost about $2200. The rifle accounts for about $750 of that. When I do my job it will put ten shots in .6 inch at a hundred yds.

Hmmm for this I'd mount a Leupold Scout Scope. Mid-Range so you don't need alot of power, Multi Purpose so you want a large field of view and the ability to perform snap shots. Scout Scope would be perfect on an M1A.

IMHO if you are going to get a variable w/MILDOT then the only choice out there is the Springfield Gen III. Springfield has the MILDOTs on the correct focal plane for a variable (i.e. when you increase/decrease the powder the dots get bigger/smaller) allowing them to subtend correctly at any power setting.

If you are going to go with a fixed power I personally like the Mark4 M1 10x which is enough for most shooting situations. I have a Mark 4 M1 10x on my AWP and am extreamly pleased with it.very p

If you want a variable I would not get MILDOTS (other then the Springfield) due to the fact that they need to be on a certain power setting to subtend correctly. If they are not you will not get the correct outcome of the formula which will result in an incorrect range and a possible miss/wound. Then you have to take into consideration that if you move the power setting to range you then have to deside what to do after you get the range.... crank up the power?... takes more time.

Schmit,
I like the Leupold 3.5-10x mil dots. I just keep it on 10x and treat it as you do the M4. I just have the option of cranking down to 4x and ignoring the dots. The lower powers are for quick shots [insert paranoid scenerio here] and wider field of view and range finding is not an issue for that purpose.

Race..

I understand. However, you have to remember us Marines have to keep things simple. Too many "variables" and we get sooooo confused. :D
