I was just looking through the mail in coupon I got with my M1A and noticed the cost of the scope that was built for the gun is nearly half that of the rifle. I'm guess Springfield builds a good product for their rifle, but are there any others who are comparable, or similar and cost less? Are there any that you would rather have on your rifle?

My father owned a Carl Zeiss, but his hiking skills aren't what they once were and he took a spill and the scope met with bedrock. A moment of silence was held for the unfortunate scope, and then he made up for it with a moment of profanity.

So what would be your favorite scope to put on the M1A?

I'm still debating on a scope myself. I've been looking at a Leupold LPS or a Vari-X III Long Range Tactical. I would be interested in hearing if anyone has any experience with these scopes or with the Springfield scope. The LPS is supposed to have top of the line optics, how does the Springfield compare?

Here is what I would do with that coupon.

Even if you don't want one of those Springfield scopes at half the cost, buy one or two anyway. Why? It is an investment. I bought the 6X government model with my coupon for $109. I sold it two years later for $200. I bought the thrird generation scope mount for $49! I sold it two years later for $110. Buy those things cheap and then put them on ebay or http://www.forthehunt.com and make nearly half to double your cost. Just a suggestion from a guy who has done it.

Thanks for the suggestion. The price on the darn scope mount went up by the way... but I guess I need to place an order to them anyway to get the cleaning kit. Their coupon price for that is good.

Springfield Scopes

A.REX,
If you happen to purchase the SA scope/s......do as El Rojo suggested...they are not that good a scope.....any of them.
They are prone to fail, and are not worth the price even with a discounted coupon...sad to say, but that's life.
They are subbed out to the lowest bidder's, and used to be decent scopes.....NO MORE.

Tshoes, you mean Springfield doesn't even make their scopes?! Deceptive. So say I decide to buy a scope one day, what is a good recommendation for this rifle? I'd like to use it at the range, possibly competition one day (if I ever get good enough), hunting, and in the worst case scenario~ sniping.

Scopes...in General........

A Rex,
No, S A does not make their scopes...nor do many other companies.
Even Leupold, has their glass mfgd by someone else.

Remember that the glass isn't "bad", even in some of the cheapest scopes. Some have better coatings than others, but the actual grindings are generally just fine.

Cost and value have more to do with the reticle and adjustment mechanism, first; and then the quality of the tube. "It's what's inside that counts."

At about $850 would anyone consider a Leupold LPS scope to be "worth it". Or should I stick to a "Tactical Vari-X III 4.5-14x50mm Long Range Matte Duplex" for about $620. Or is there another brand with a better value?

Q-Man, if you shoot in long range competition, it's sorta like the choice between Snap On tools versus anything else: "The best is barely good enough."

For me, with only hunting as my primary shooting, and casual target "playing" out to 500 yards, a Vari-X II 3x9 has been quite sufficient. Right now, I've been meddling around at 500-yard targets, and a $100 Simmons 44 Mag 3x10 has been just fine. That scope has travelled numerous miles in a 4WD over rough jeep trails without losing its zero, so I guess its internal parts are well made. For what I do, there is no point in spending another $500 or more for a scope.

If price is no particular problem, always go with the long-term durability "best".

I guess.

Who makes the champ dura-beatable scope?

I looked at some scopes today and saw CHINA printed on the housing, even from many makes that used to be US. That bothered me. Everything I've ever seen that had China written on it usually lacked significantly in quality. As for myself, I refuse to buy the stuff.

I have a 3rd Gen SA Scope

on my PSS. I love it, and have had absolutely no trouble with it. I almost think that the people who say they are bad are the same ones who think Leupold is the holy of holies in the scope world. They say that any competition sucks, just like people do when it comes to their favorite brand of firearms. SA has a lifetime warranty on their optics, just like Leupold. I don't know about Leupold, but SA states that their scopes are .50 bmg shock-proof. Seem pretty sturdy to me! So, since you can get one cheap, go ahead and try it. If you don't like it, sell it! If you do like it, they're typically a lot cheaper than an equivalent Leupold. I'm about to buy their model with the .223 BDC for my SL8.
