Hi folks,

I really am lost and need some input here

I’m wondering if any of these would be what you might choose for use as a really nice scope for HD and all around varmint abatement and plinking at the range with a .40 S&W semi auto carbine.

Price is an issue but if it is warranted, then fine.

I'm in the dark on every one of these as to build, QA, Customer service, reputation, Value, Warranty, or reliability,

1. Millette BK81008 - 4-16x50MT MDBAR30MM25MOA @ natchez shooting supply = $339

2. Weaver out of production Model 2.5-10X50 Classic Extreme Riflescope illum Ger 4 reticle
Or 2.5x10x56 as above. @ natchez shooting supply = $295 approx

The weaver scares me as I can not get an up to date pdf owner manual, or speak with anyone from Weaver about it or some other. Are they shut down?

3. TruGlo Tru-brite 4-16x50 Illuminated Bullet Drop Compensator Reticle Matte Black Rifle scope. Model: TG8541BXB. $155 @ Cheaper Than Dirt

My Poor eyesight now requires more magnification of course, and an illuminated reticle. Circle is preferred, or green is fine.

It will definitely see very light or if at all use but it would be nice to have about for use on private lands or at ranges, and perhaps for HD..

Thanks much.

I don't know anything about the Millet personally. My neighbor that I hunt and shoot with has two. I think you could run over one of them with a battle tank and it would still work, the other one won't hold zero three shots in a row.

I've never been fond of anything that I looked through that had Tru Glo on it.

I've never looked through the Weaver Classic Extreme but I do own two Weaver Super Slam 2X10X50 with EBX reticles that I couldn't be happier with. Natchez had them for $329.00 for a while, I think they are now $399.00 or maybe higher. Great glass, clear and very precise. Probably one of the best scope buys I've made for the money I spent.

Another one to consider if you are looking at Natchez is the left over Bushnell 4200 that they have. Excellent scopes for the money.

I have the CenterPoint 4-16x40mm mounted on all my guns, and love it. Walmart got them for under $80.00. I even mounted one on my BB PumpMaster.

Thanks. Definitely thanks for the heads up on the bushnel.

$80! Wally world? doesn't blink off, keeps it's zero? Doesn't fog up? Good eye relief?

You said that your rifle is chambered for 40S&W. I would suggest staying with the 3-9 magnification. Never mind BDC reticle and such because they will not correspond with the trajectory of your cartridge. I find that an adjustable objective is handy, but that shouldnt be a deal breaker. Recoil is not going to be a concern either, so investing in some glass that costs more than your rifle would not be prudent. A bushnell or tasco should do the job.

out of your choises the weaver is hands down the best scope. I have one milet a ill. 1x4 its a fair scope. Not a great scope but a decent one. I had one 6.5x20 truglo one time and it made a tasco look like a ziess in comparison. DO NOT BUY ONE!

None of them are a good choice for a pistol caliber rifle. A fixed 2X or a 1-4X and never take it off 1X or 2X. is more than adequate. A red dot would be a better option.

My 40cal wears a Bushnell shotgun scope 1.5x5 more then enough for the artridge, on low power setting wide angle view with enough light and xcellent eye relief. IMO large scope would be wasted on the 40 caliber.

My long range .308 wears that same Millett TRS.... It is way too much scope for a .40 S&W carbine (as are your other choices, IMO). I would stick to a 1x-4x scope or a red dot for a pistol caliber carbine.

Amen to what porche said. You don't need to see a gnat clearly at 400 yards when you're gonna be slinging a pistol round at him. Natchez has both the Nikon Buckmaster and ProStaff 3-9x40's on sale now for $159-189. You won't beat them at that price,

Hi guys
A fella said to me recently, “Ya gotta start somewhere!”

And now we have… Thanks a lot.

All those BDC, holdover, parallax, etc., are just trivial items for me and likely have no bearing on which one I would choose. It’s just fluff.

Added stuff that comes with those models. I could care less.

For someone else, Yes! For me, Nope. Don’t care.. it/they just happened to be there.

Provided I could see like anyone else on average, the magnification aspect you point ot as being inappropriate at 3 x 12, or 16, is something I tend to agree with. I kind of tend to agree with it anyhow, as the field itself will drop under increasing magnification too.

I also thought as the mag was variable? One does not have TO USE ALL OF THE SETTINGS… only those positions they want or need… like 5, or 6 or 7x.

Again, just cause one has 16x doesn’t mean I gotta use it.

I kinda felt too, in their price rnages the overall build would be better, than to find one having all or almost all of those same features in a scope costing $89.

It is my eyes which beg moore lumens! More magnification.

For me, 1.5, 2, or 2.5, enough lens might could work.to begin with on the low end.

The fact all of these scopes have illuminated reticle, more than anything else drew me to them. Well, that and their prices. Especially the Truglow @ $155~! Their brand neames some, and a notion there must be some quality inside scopes which used to cost $700 - $900 retail.

THE Weaver at Natchez sales, selling for $269 - $299 are discontinued models. Old ones… but NIB.. and went for $900 at some point. I think I saw a Weaver, which is out of production now as is the above model, which has only 1.5x on it’s low end, and 4x up top, and the 4x is probably why I passed on that one.
I do need more mag than most. I do in fact need a ‘lit up aim point – reticle’ most of the time.
For me, Circles are better than dots if red… and green dots if no circles are around, is better than red ones.

The idea of a shotgun scope got my attention. Great thought there, thanks!
That and the notion of an illuminated aiming point together, sure sounds like the best idea so far… if one exists. And Doesn’t cost as much as another rifle!.

Any models out there containing that last set of benefits available?

Anyone mind telling me 2hat is a GER 4 reticle look like?

Blindjim, take a look at how big the Millett TRS is on my Rem 700 (26" barrel)

It really is a huge scope. I am not just saying that a pistol caliber carbine doesn't warrant the higher magnification, I am saying that it doesn't need all of that weight. Your rifle was intended to be light and controllable, but adding a scope like that completely kills its mobility. I would say a 9x magnification is the max that you should add, both in terms of weight and magnification. Also, I would not advise getting anything with an objective lens diameter of over 40mm. Anything larger is more unnecessary weight, and won't offer you any noticeable advantage.
