Scoped M1A

I hate to ask these kind of questions, but one can get so much feedback!

I am seriously considering scoping my rifle, after 1 yr with iron sights. I shoot 1-200 yrds, maybe 600 at the range. I am leaning toward ARMS mount, with Leupold M8 fixed at 4x or 6x.

I have been reluctant to add a scope before, cause the rifle is just not designed for it. Besides the clunky mount, I am afraid this will then require a pad for the stock, to line up the cheek weld, etc.

So, will a 4x or 6x be a good general purpose scope? Comments?

Thanks
Dave

I use a 4x Tasco Bantam on my FAL, and it works great out to around 400 yards. Nice and compact with good long eye relief.

I sold my scope and mount.

I couldn't get very good cheek weld on my M1A at all. So I started to shoot national match and so I sold my mount and scope and just use the iron sights now. I also bought a Remington 700 VS in .308 and put a Leupold 6.5-20 LRT on it to compensate.

Dave if you are going to get a mount get the Smith Enterprise mount. It is low and you can still use your iron sights with it. My friend has one on his and it's a great mount. Doesn't loosen up like alot of the others. It's modeled after the Brookfield which was the military mount used to scope sniper M-14s. They run about $149 from Dillon precision but shop around and see if you can find them cheaper. I wouldn't get any of the cheap ones in Shotgun News or the like becuase they will loosen up and you will be pulling your hair out. Good luck.

Also I forgot to add that you don't need a cheek rest. the mount is very low and you get a very good cheekweld. At least me and my friend did but everyone is different.

Smith Mount

Rob, yes it looks like the Smith is also one of the best mounts.

I like the idea of a lower mount. Can anbody else comment on the height of the Smith unit?

El Rojo, a good weld is one of my concerns, while spending all this cash - what if it doesn't feel right? I should prolly find some samples at the range and try them on for size.

Thanks
Dave

Easy fix for that cheek weld problem

1. Use a low scope mount, like the Brookfield, Smith, or my favorite, the ARMS #18. (Another USGI issue mount w/NSN)
2. There's lace-on, velcro/cordura, sorbethane, and totally adjustable integrated cheekpieces. I went a different direction and chose a comb riser from an H&K G3, which is secured to my M14NM's stock via two allen-head sheet metal screws. When I need to convert back to iron sights, it's easily removed, just like the scope from the ARMS mount.

Piece of cake!
