Scoped M1A and ejected brass problem.

I have a have a problem with spent brass from my M1A coming into contact with the windage turret on my scope as they are ejected. I am utilizing the SA 3rd Gen. mount and a Tasco SS scope. Do any of you with a scoped M1A have the same problem? If so, what do you suggest as a fix?

Thanks. :)

fix

BUY A SMITH ENTERPRISES MOUNT...OR A BROOKFIELD PRECISION IF YOU CAN FIND ONE....THEY ARE LOWER, AND WILL ALLOW THE BRASS TO BE DEFLECTED AT A DIFERENT ANGLE.......AS THEY WILL HIT THE MOUNT FIRST.
Please forgive the caps....I didn't know they were on.......

Aw, c'mon Tshoes. Wasn't that worth shouting about? :D

I have one of those POS (not my opinion) Springfield scopes on a 3rd Gen. mount (another POS to some) and have never had a problem with ejected brass hitting either the base or the scope. Maybe the whole danged rig is too high for the ejection arc.

I don't like my brass hitting anything but the ground after it goes bang!

kgs, The solution is easy. Rotate your scope 90 degrees counter-clock-wise. Your elevation turret will become your windage turret and visa-versa. The scope won't know the difference and ejected brass will never be a problem again. -- Kernel

Kernel...

Great minds must think alike because that's exactly the solution I came up with last night after giving it some more thought. :D

What an easy solution to rotate the scope! Why didn't I think of it before? :o

Thanks Kernel!

Not so fast

Be careful about rotating the scope. Depending on the ranges you shoot, you may need more adjustment for bullet drop than the windage range will allow. Just a thought. Don't know what you can do about the brass. Maybe a small piece of rubber on the bottom of the mount, over the port, would "lower" the mount and deflect it away from the scope.

I have seen a boot fitting over the scope in a recent issue of American Rifleman on the new Ruger .44 mag rifle. Not exactly the best looking solution but it seemed functional. MWT

Cordura and cable tie straps!

My M14NM kept hitting the windage turret in my Weaver V16, with ARMS mount, so I ended up using a small piece of black cordura nylon cloth, with a pair of those small black cable tie straps, and made a shield that strapped snugly to the bottom of the scope. Very effective, and it doesn't look too awkward, either.

This was addressed over on the M14/M1A collector's forum about two weeks ago. The guys there are suggesting that an M1A/M14 that has this problem needs a little extractor/ejector tweaking. Obviously, by someone who knows what their doing.
