I think for a 45/70 the best bet is open sights or a halo sight.

For the vast majority of people hunting with this gun would be done at short distances.

But it does look very nice.

Chucky, Im not sure on the durability. I Contacted BSA about it. They Claim that it will be fine. But i doubt it will.

Deja vu, When i first bought it i wasnted to do the ghost ring sites. But after trying a buddies with them i couldnt hit the side of a barn with them. But i feel the same way. Sure looks better with peep or open sites.

The wife and i just got back in from sighting it in. Only started at 25 yards. Made a great hole for hole group. Didnt take it to 50 like i wanted as it was just to hot. (108F)

Many object to scoping a "traditional" lever gun, and I say, fine, don't. But don't tell me what to do with mine.

I used an old Weaver 2.5x Post scope on my 1895 for years. Fast, and accurate. Traded that rifle last year (surplus to needs), but kept the scope. They aren't easy to find anymore.

I bought a Williams Peep & Firesight for my 1894 44mag, but my eyes (older) arent sighted-in beyond 100, old is better than dead (for now). Haa!

Here is a quick pic of a two shot group at 100 yards.

And just for kicks and giggles my wife making sure her rifle is still on from last year. (3 Holes touching each other at 100 Yards)

And a quick video.

Slam,

I certainly am not going to tell a farmer from Texas what to do about his gun (I remember how tough you guys were at the Alamo!). But seeing a scope on that CB, did raise a lump in my throat. I'm 57 with bifocals and have no problems with seeing stuff in a peep. One other suggestion is that with all them piggies you have roaming around the state, a peep sight would be more advantageous. Here is a photo of a Skinner Sight on an 1895, they are reasonable in price and service is out of this world!

drjjpdc,
I really like that sight. Alot cleaner then the one that was on a friends gun. Only problem with open/peep sights, is i do 95% of my hunting from a blind. and Out to 200 yards.

I didn't get along well with the factory sights on my 1895G so I decided to go ahead and put a scope on it. I felt bad right up until I went to the range and the first group at 100 yards was 1/2".

Slam, yeah a peep isn't practical in that situation.

What I really like about them is not only how they look, the prices (the blue ones start around $59) and how easily they are made variable for other brands besides Marlin. Andy is now set up for Mossberg, Henry, T/C and H&R.
