That all depends on your scope. I zero mine at 500 yards. I don't have a top quality scope. Those that i shoot with that do have great glass zero at 300.
This will depend on the shooter,load,and the amount of elevation the scope and base have. 
As always temp and how far you are above sea level are a factor and will change . In the old days we used to always re zero at every shoot . But what do I know I forgot more then I remember .

Well, here we go:
Shooter is good, not great, I am not new to long range shooting, but taking it to the next level right now.
Load is a.308 Win, 175 Gr SMK in Lapua brass that has proven very accurate to 600 yards consistently.
Scope is a very good Vortex Viper 6.5-20 x50 Mil Dot. Very accurate, consistent, and has never not held zero. EGW 20MOA Base mounted
Rifle is a Rem 700 Bull Barrel, that will be wearing a free float stock soon.
Elevation around here is approximately 1800 Feet above Sea level.
My LR gun is zeroed for 200 yards, and I have comeups for all ranges out to 1000.
You can get in the ballpark using a ballistic program like JBM, make sure you put in the correct info for sight height, elevation, and temp for the day you are going. When you are shooting, take notes. Get a log book, and know on this day at this range, I had to come up "X" minutes for "Y" range.
I generally leave the windage knob alone, just hold off, but do adjust the elevation knob for range.

If your experianced at 600 yards already ,you can pretty much zero in at 300 to 600 if your shooting 1000. Temp and humidity will still dictate if you stay at the same elivation . You seam to be on the right track already . If your eye sight stays good your going to get better and better as you pratice . good luck and enjoy .

My "poor boy" F-T/R rifle, an accessorized Savage 110/.308 w/ 26" heavy barrel lives on a diet of 175 gr SMK's.
It is "on" at 600, theoretically anyhow. It will put me in the black at that range and I can fine tune w/ sighters. Much depends on the conditions and the batch of ammo.
My 1000 yd comeup is +23MOA. That usually puts me in the black, and I can refiine w/ sighters. My last 1000 yd shoot I put +23 on the rifle and shot a bit high. Down 1 MOA to +22 yielded an X. Annoyingly, the only one I shot all day!
As I don't have access to a 600 or 1000 yd range locally, I verify my zero's by shooting at 100. At 100, with my 600 yd zero on the rifle, I should be 15MOA high. Or put another way, if I put -15MOA on the rifle, I will be on at 100.

Zero dead on at one hundred yards. Chronograrph your loads and print out a ballistics table. I use the JBL program. Our F class league shoots 300, 600, and 1,000 yards. Adjustments for different ranges are all made from 100 yard zero.

I leave tomorrow for a 4 day precision rifle course. With luck, I'll make it out to 1000 yds. We will be doing a 100 yd zero (per info from other students).
