scope suggestions?

I took my Stevens 416 to a gun smith today. He told me if I bring him a scope, he can put it on the gun.

So what scope do you guys think would be good:

1. It's a .22 long rifle
2. I intend to use the scope for target shooting only.
3. I have about $100 to spend on the scope.
4. I'm not worried about the cost of the mounts and other stuff right now.

So given that criteria, what does everybody suggest?

scope?

I would go with a full size 4X Tasco, Bushnell, simmons, Leapers They're all good scopes considering that you're not going to shoot much over 100yds. luck hotdog:D

Yeah, 4X is "plenty nuff" scope for a .22 rifle. You oughta be able to find some brand's medium-quality version for around $50. There are also some adequate, higher-powered variables out there for under $100.

Look around some; don't be in a hurry.

Well, riding along in a jeep late in the afternoon of the last day of a deer season, I spotted a buck out around 350 yards. I collected his little volunteer self.

I then noticed my 3X9 scope was set on 3X. :)

Now: For target shooting, if you're seriously trying to drive tacks, "more is better"--up to a point. I note that with 9X or 10X you can see .22 holes at 100 yards. However, a .22 rimfire from a "casual" rifle isn't really a tight-group 100-yard gun.

IMO, for 25- or 50-yard shooting, 4X or 6X is just fine.

In the FWIW department, you'll need to hunt through various brands of ammo, and different loadings within those brands, for the particular load that your rifle likes best. .22s can be notoriously "picky" about their diet.

I kinda want to do anywhere from 25 - 100 yards.

And from what serveral stores, and gun smith's have told me, this gun should certainly do good at 50, and ok at 100.

I've seen some scopes that have an adjustable magnification. What's the deal on these?
