scope suggestion for savage 10 FP .223cal

LEAD POISON

New member
Rifle will be used for benchrest shooting, possibly varmiting, and just general target shooting etc. Range will be under 200yds most of time. I have narrowed my scopes to
Leupold vari-x III tact 4.5-14x40mm or
Leupold vari-x III 6.5-20x40mm
Can anyone give me little info. on the tactical model e.g. functions,
advantages, disadvantages, etc.
Any info/comments would be helpful and appreciated.

Leupold's are a solid scope...

You can't go wrong with a Leupold Scope. I have a Var X III 6.5-20 on my .22-250 and it is an incredible piece of glass. I can see .22 cal holes at 300 yards (depending on weather conditions) and the light transmission is excellent. On a .223, shot under 200 yards, the 14 power is plenty (if not a lot more than u need) if u want to shoot out to 300-400 yards than I would get a 20 power...

If you are keeping range under 200, you could go with a lower power scope. I have a 15x fixed on my H&R Ultra Rifle (my varminter) and it is ok out to 400, and would probably work for 500+. More power would be nice for those ranges, at 200 20x would decrease your field of view to much in many cases and amplify mirage. I think they make a 3.5-10x that would be nice for your uses.
