Scope Selection for Savage 10FP

What might be the best choice for a high quality, but very simple scope for a Savage 10FP/.308 for 100 - 200 yard target shooting? So far the Leupold Vari-X lll 4.5-14x40 AO has been recommended.

Tasco SS10X42

The Tasco SS10X42 is a nice, true 30mm tube 10X mil-dot tactical scope with large easily grasped waterproof knobs. It is sharp, crisp, contrasty, and bright. The parallax adjusts using a ring where the power ring on a variable is located. (There is the SS10X42M which has a side focus knob.)

I know, you say Tasco is POS :barf: , but you should look at this scope. I would never put any Tasco on my rifles, but this ain't your normal Tasco. I had this scope on my PSS until a friend wheedled it out of me for cost. (I replaced it with a Leupold Vari-X III 3.5-10X40LR M3). I would buy another and am going to mount one on a smallbore rifle I have since they focus to well under 50 yards (I believe 25, but cannot remember) I found the adjustments to be very, very precise and repeatable.

You will not find anything close for $299. Sold by SWFA (http://www.riflescopes.com). They used to have an even better deal if you bought 2.

I concur with 700PSS Shooter. I have one of the Tasco SS10X42's on my Savage 10FP/.308 and it works great. I have Leupolds on all my other rifles but for the Tactical application, I find the mil-dot arrangement better. As he said, you won't find another mil-dot scope as good as this in the price range. That said, this, of course, is not a Leupold Mk3, etc. They are much better scopes but for my budget (and my limited skills), the Tasco is excellent. One caveat, the side-focus 10X42M's have had problems. Stick with the simpler and more reliable 10X42.

Tasco SS models

I concur with the other gentlemen in the regard to the rear adjustable objective unit ONLY.

On another issue, I think you had the right idea to begin with............

There is a saying, "I am too poor to buy lesser quality things".

Meaning, if you buy something thinking you will be saving money......you may very well NOT.

Buy the best optics you can afford on the front end, and you won't be doing it again.

I can think of absolutely NO other venue, than rifle optics were this is MORE true.

You will ALWAYS get what you pay for............

Best of decisions.and luck.;)

What he said---------with me and my buddies Leupold is pretty much considered the starting point--then going on to the German scopes. Start saving your money and stay away from Simmons-Tasco--Bushnell and all those other low priced POS's. Or is it---P'sOS???

When you get to that point---they're all good and they're all around $1000------I would suggest that you stick with the Leupold for your Savage. Kahles has some nice scopes in the $500 range.
