Scope ring lapping

Any recommendations for products and procedures for scope ring lapping? I'm planning on mounting a Leupold 4.5 x 14 3/4 mildot on a PSS with standard Leupold low rings. I already have it loosely mounted for eye relief and to ensure that the front bell clears the barrel.

I use a foot long piece of 1" drill rod and wrap a layer of 400 grit wet or dry sandpaper around it. Then I push it back and forth and also turn it in the rings. Misalignment will show up and one can adjust the rings to be parallel. Then hone the rings a little more. I have never put ring marks in a scope after doing this, it just takes a minute.

Lapping compound is also real good for this. You'll see your progress by the loss of blueing. Be careful not to overdo it....you don't need to remove every bit of blueing from the rings. Also, it's my understanding that many lap only the bottoms as that's where the scope seats.....the tops are left in factory condition.

Make certain to align the lapping rod (or scope) in the rings and then torque them down before starting. Then remove the tops of the rings and get to it.

Check out www.sinclairintl.com They have a very inexpensive ring lapping kit, about $18, and it comes with directions and is very easy to use. Your scope probably has a 30mm tube so just get the 30mm tube kit. I've lapped about 7 sets of rings, not all mine mostly friends, and I still have plenty of the lapping compound to do more. I highly recommend this kit over some home fixes that might work but if you don't know how to use them you might do more damage than good.
