Scope ring height

I just bought myself a fantastic rifle, as I have been planning to do for some time...

I also have a scope in mind to put on it, but I'm wondering what kind of rings to get.

I have a Steyr SSG 04 in .308, and I'm looking at putting a Zeiss scope on it. The scope has a 1 inch tube and a 50mm objective lens. I'm thinking maybe leupold mk 4 rings, and was wondering if the medium rings would do.

I do want to mount the scope as low as possible while still having some clearance, so will the mediums do or will I have to get the high rings?

Thanks for your help all, I do appreciate it!

I very much agree with this point of view so I'm wondering if the store where you'll buy the rings will allow you to "test fit" them for compatibility? I would hate to end up mounting my scope any higher than I really needed to-and it doesn't take much difference to make a difference.

I think you did buy a "fantastic' rifle!

Through my searches, I found that there was a distinct lack of leupold 1" high rings. Burris, on the other hand had them.

I ended up getting the Burris high rings, and they arrived today, along with the scope. I mounted it all up and found that I have over half an inch of clearance all along the underside of my scope. I did some more research, and found that the Burris low mounts are exactly half an inch shorter.

After doing the math, I figure I can get the low rings and still have some clearance.

But my brother and I are planning a trip to the range this coming saturday, and I just can't wait to shoot this rifle, so I'll have to re-sight for the lows when I get them on the rifle.

It's a fantastic scope, and a fantastic rifle. I just can't wait! :D
