My head is spinning! I've ordered a Sako TRG-S sporting rifle in .338 Lapua as my "general purpose" rifle and need a scope, but need some serious input regarding the reticle. Some background is needed to explain how this all came about.
I'm a handgunner, favoring the Dan Wesson .445 Supermag and own two. I had been living in Michigan where the cover is very tight, then moved to the desert mountains of southern Idaho where ranges are wide open. Now I'm in Germany and am planning to proceed to Canada for school. I'll either end up in Thunder Bay Ontario or Sudbury.
I selected it as potent enough for whatever crosses my path in the Americas or Europe. Recoil sensativity isn't the issue here with the .338 Lapua. I don't expect to be shooting beyond 400-yards, and may employ it in the thick bush.
This isn't going to be an exclusively long-range rig, but a generalist. I'm buying just 1 rifle to address my needs when as a non-traditional student, I enter into the relative poverty of school. (Thank heaven I reload!) This has to address multiple game animals and situations, and reticle is the key.
Hunting is usually in low-light, so I do favor illuminated reticles.
But what reticle should I get?
German # 4? I would guess it would be good for running game, but never owned one. I'd guess it wouldn't be the best for long-range (400 yards).
Duplex post? Probably better for long-range, but what about running game?
I need strong opinions, examples, and direct recommendations!
