Scope replacement

A question about changing scopes. I just bought a Rem 700 with a scope mounted, and I want to replace it with a Redfield 3-9X40 that I've had for some time now. Can I just remove the top rings and lay the Redfield into them, (with correct alignment and ring size, of course), or do I have to deal with a bore sighting tool? And if an explaination is needed, bear in mind that this is my first scoped weapon. So you can explain it like I'm a recruit!

The rifle has been shot fairly recently, and the owner has had it for a while.

Thanks in advance!

S.

Echo3mike, you will need to bore sight. Just pick an object about 25 yards away. Clamp the rifle in a padded vise etc, remove the bolt and look through the barrel. Get the object centered in the bore and then move your cross-hairs to it. When you go to the range set a target at 25 yds and sight your rifle in to hit 1.5" beneath your point of aim. This should put you on paper at 100. George
