scope recommendations for a Savage American Classic 114 in 30-06

All of my current rifles are short to intermediate range and are fitted with red dots. I know very little about scopes. I've been wanting something that can reach out and touch so I have a Savage American Classic Blued model 114 in 30-06 on the way. My understanding is that most scopes nowadays are shorter and I may have to get a particular base and ring for those or just a longer scope. Please correct me if I'm wrong. My budget on this is around $200-$300. Going low in case I want to try out a couple of different ones. I can always put it on one of the other rifles. Once I'm settled on what I like after some use I will probably be looking to upgrade to $700-$1,000 I just don't want to drop that much on something I don't have any experience with.

I will likely target shoot at 100 alot with the occasional trip out to do some much longer shots and the annual hunt. So maybe a 3-9x40, a 4-12x44, or other. Mildot or BDC, or other. I'm open and would appreciate some insight. Please advise type of base and scope you'd recommend.

When I mounted my scope on my 110, I opted to use Redfield bases, so I had to use extended rings to get the scope mounter properly for eye relief. The Savage long action is a long action and sometimes mounting a scope can be problematic.

If I had to do it again, I'd probably go with a one piece base, either the Weaver base or the EGW base, depending on my preference and pocketbook. Either of those should serve just fine and would allow you a range of options on mounting your scope.

It is not that scopes are any shorter, it is that Savage, and only Savage uses a very LOOOONG action. You won't have any troubles with any other rifle maker. Notice the odd placement of the rings and how they had to be placed to fit a scope on this Savage rifle.

The number of scopes and mounts that will work together are a bit limited because of the HUGE distance Savage uses between mounting holes on their rifles.

I'f you use something like a 1 piece DNZ mount it will make scope selection much simpler. Basically anything will fit, but there is no way to prevent the mounts from hanging over the action opening. With typical 2 piece mounts there are simply many scopes that are too short, and if they fit you don't have much room to play with correct eye relief.

In that price range my 1st choices are the leupold VX-1 or VX-2. A 3-9X40 is all you need. If you want to keep the price closer to $200 look at the Burris FF-II
