Scope recommendations - F-Class Target

I dare say this has already been raised many many times but I don't know enough about the topic to narrow the search results down. I read that cheap scopes just fall apart under the 'stress' of target shooting with a 308. So, what is a minimum quality scope that won't fall apart suited to Fclass shooting 300-900 yards? What zoom range do I need for 300-900 yard shooting. I could buy a March 8-80x scope but I don't know how serious I will be in a year or 2 so want to start at the minimum (or slightly better) level for FClass and work my way up some time down the track (something that would get me into the bottom of A grade).

Cheers

David

I know a lot of guys use the NF 8-32 x 56...but I don't shoot comps so can't offer firsthand advice.

I do shoot long range though, and I've never had a day where I would be able to use 80x magnification...our scopes are max 24x, and many days that magnification can be unusable at even 600 yards due to mirage.

I suppose it has a lot to do with where you shoot. Mirage is the obvious killer, and in Florida, over the hot sand, in the summertime...

A bud of mine, who is a F Class National champion, he is using a Nightforce scope.

A female shooter I shoot small bore with, she is the 2011 Woman F Class Champ, I think she is using a Luepold.

I cannot remember the brand, but the lady told me of a very expensive brand, like $3000 expensive, where the elevation and windage adjustments became erratic, for several shooters.

I've started shooting F-T/R and the Fclass shooters are on the line at the same time. Most common scope brand I see is toss up between Nightforce and Leupold. The Leupolds are all top end, not always Mark 4's, but LR highdollar scopes.

I shot my first match with a vintage K12, all I had after assembling the rifle, and did not too bad. I've since gone to a Burris XTR 6-24x, mainly cause it was cheaper than a Leupold. ( I got a DEAL). I'll go out on a limb and say that on a midrange (600) course, you could get by w/ a minimum of 12x, for 1000 yd, no less than 16x and more likely better. I've run my xTR at over 20x on all the shoots I've used it in. The 10 ring is 1 MOA and the X a 1/2, so it is a small target. If you've got the skill, reading the mirage in the high X scopes is a plus.

My goal at every match is not to finish last!!!!!!!!!

Nightforce seems to be best value for money in the high end scopes, very popular.

Other wise I'd say a Nikon something or a Bushnell Elite, for mid range price.

Some people will say all you need is a 10x zoom, but I reckon if you've got at least 20x you'll manage.
