I'm looking for something for a standard 1 inch ghost ring, with 1.5x to 2x magnification and preferably something under $200. Considering it for a scout concept rifle (or not but something similar). Will be used occasionally for small to medium game hunting to defensive applications by a civilian.

I've got a Leupold "Scout" on my Ruger #1 and a Burris "Scout" on my sons TC Youth Carbine.
The Leupold is more compact and has a slight edge in optical clarity.
The Burris has slightly higher magnification.
They are both fine scopes but choosing between the two, I'd give the edge to the Leupold. Its little brighter, a little clearer and much more compact.
If money is a real consideration, you can save a few bucks on the burris and you'll be perfectly satisfied with it as well.

These are both good scopes.

Josh, you've figured me out. Yes, most likely it will be on a Mini-14 with a scout rail. (By the way, any recommendations on that rail?) Sorry about that too as it was also an important piece of information I left out.
