Scope question

I may be adding a scope to my K31. This would be my first scope ... I'm sure a 3-9x40 will suffice - my question is:
Will I be happy with a <$200 Bushnell/Leupold or should I go with a $400 Zeiss Conquest? I'm guessing the difference would be mostly in the quality of the glass/image clarity - which maybe I can live without. I'm wondering if there are any other differences, like durability/reliability/ease of set up/ease of use.
What says the collective?
If there's some more applicable Scope discussion, throw me a link, pls. (most scope discussion I've seen is a bit more advanced and over my head)

Certainly, the glass will be better. But for higher quality scopes, the erection system will also be better. The erection system holds the lenses that allow magnification change and the cross hair reticule. The quality of the erection system allows precise repeatable clicks when adjusting the scope's zero.
Keeping the cross hairs on target is every bit as important as seeing the target clearly.

Yup.

A lot of the cost is in the precision, and "repeat-ability" of the adjustments.
Dial up a $100 BSA, and then a $1,500 Nightforce. Like closing the door on a Yugo vs. a Mercedes...you can "feel" the tightness and precision. Cheaper scopes are "mushy"...

I think the Nikon Prostaff 3-9x40mm for $169.00 or the Nikon Prostaff 3-9x50mm for $209.00 are hard to beat for the money. In both models you get a fast focus eyepiece, great optics, finger adjustable turrets, mine tracks great, holds zero and has a lifetime warranty.

Minox ZA3 3x9x40. Fingertip adjustments, fast focus and much clearer glass than the Nikon Prostaff. Minox also has a lifetime warranty. They buy their glass from Zeiss and the scopes are assembled in the US even though they are a German company.

I just got mine about a week ago and sighted it in today. At the same time I was sighting in another rifle that has my Nikon Prostaff mounted on it.

Check out Camera Land New York for the best deal on the Minox.

No matter what scope you use it needs to be fairly heavy duty as the K31 has a good amount of recoil. The K31's I have scoped have all had steel tube Weavers on them, K2.5's or K4's. I prefer the old school scope look on a mil surp.

I don't think you need more than a 4X scope. My ZFK has a 3.5X and it can reach out to 4-500 yds with ease.

Leaupold or Redfield would work fine on that gun. $200 range for the Refield and varying amounts more for the Leupold (and US made)

One thought is to go to 12 magnification for when the eyes start to shift.

I used to be able to do fine with a 7 at 100 yards, now it looks like a 12 would work (target shooting not hunting, even a 7 is good for hunting out to 200)

Price is good and a lifetime warranty without any BS.

Nikon BDC Scopes

Hard to go wrong with a New 2011 Nikon ProStaff Scope, especially when you add in the BDC reticle for better long range accuracy. I think the ProStaff 3-9 would work great for your needs.
Just as a FYI, Nikon currently has a Promotion going on for their Buckmaster line of scopes. Buy one from an Authorized Nikon Dealer and get a FREE Nikon Digital Camera ( $120 retail value), pretty great deal.

Check it out at Nikonhunting.com for more info on Promotion.
I hope this helps?

If you don't want to dive into top dollar optics at this point, try the Bushnell Banner 4X12 with adjustable objective. I recently bought my third one for my Marlin .243. I got it down to 1/2" groups, and have bagged coyotes with it out to over 200 yards. It holds zero and works just fine. I had one on a .300 magnum I shot hundreds of rounds through and it never let me down. These are $99 at Academy; I'd buy another one in a heartbeat.
