Scope my M-1 Carb or not?

Anyone got an M-1 Carbine scoped? Is it worth it or not.

I have two sets of sights for mine, the original military peep sight and a Williams sport sight, but I prefer the peep of the two.

This is my only rifle without a scope and I think I would be more accurate at a distance with the scope.

Anyone ever put a red dot on a carbine? That's what I would really like to do. But I have a Bushnell Trophy 3x9x40 laying here waiting for either the Carbine or my Ruger 10/22.

Any Advice

Well, the carbine was never really intended as a long range rifle with or without a scope. If the carbine is GI, though, and putting on a scope involves drilling any holes, I would have to advise against it, as GI carbines are increasing rapidly in value and drilling holes will knock several hundred dollars off a good one.

IMHO, there are other light rifles much more suitable for scoping and more capable of the long range performance that would justify it.

Not. The carbine is a short range proposition (75-100 yds) at best, and as Jim said, a US Carbine is too valuable to modify.

You could almost catch the bullets at 100 yds with a baseball glove. Almost. Don't try this at home! :p

1568 FPS @ 100 yards -- That's one hell of a glove. ;)

Anyway, unless you have really bad eyes, keep away from the scope.

If you are gonna try catching the bullets at 100 yds, you better make sure your glove is made out of something tougher than kevlar.

:p Actually, the most common mount for the g.i. carbine is the S-K insta-mount type ( the patent is long gone and several makers do the same mount now) It does NOT involve drilling or any other modification. The red dot systems work pretty well, especially for fast shots. but my favorite is one which has a red dot with a horizontal bar on each side and a vertical bar beneath. It's even faster for the eye to pick up and center on than the plain red dot. Just my $0.02

Mine is not a USGI, but instead a Universal. It is the Universal that accepts almost all USGI parts though. I can always get a USGI receiver from a guy I know.

Adding the scope will not invlove drilling, it is the same scope mount used by the USGI rifles. Mounts in place of the rear sight.

I never shoot this rifle at anything more than 100 yards anyway, so that isn't an issue. I just want to make this thing funner to shoot. Not that it isn't already fun enough.

If the M1 Carbine is a 75-100 yard proposition, somebody forgot to tell mine. It shoots minute-of-rock accurate at 200 yards without breaking a sweat. Also, .30 Carbine gets slammed a lot as an "ineffective cartridge", but it develops more energy than most pistol cartridges, which are no joke when fired from a rifle.

I think the M1 Carbine makes a fine weapon at typical MOUT distances, and its light weight and shortness means it swings onto target quickly. Also, you can carry a lot of .30 Carbine ammo...my rifle usually has 60 rounds on it ready to go (30 in the magazine and two 15-rounder spares in the butt pouch). That's a lot of bullets for a carbine. Jacketed softpoint ammo is readily available and will perform better on bad guys and critters than FMJ.

As for the original question: That carbine is already blessed with good iron sights, and a scope on an M1 Carbine doesn't look quite right.

The M1 Carbine is not noted for being a precision weapon and scoping it may bring disappointment. If it must be scoped, don't spend big ducats, livres, louies, thalers on anything like Leupold but rather a economize with a cheapie like Tasco. In fact, you may even want to see if you can get a Rooskie scope.

I'm thinking that the effective range of the M-1 carbine would make a scope pretty unnecessary. My dad has one, and I haven't ever had a problem making hits out to 150-175 yards which is about as far as I'd ever try to hit anything to put it down.

I wouldn't scope it because I'd personally have more fun using the peep at 100 yards or less anyways. IMHO A little peep sighted semiauto is so fun that I wouldn't mess with it at all!

Glocster35,
Again, I don't own one yet  but I have been looking and studing.
As Juan stated earlier I think a Red Dot would be great. Something like a 30 or 42MM BSA, DIAL NOT PUSH BUTTON.
They are fast, accurite, dependable and best of all CHEAP.
I have a 30MM on a AR15 Dissapator and a 50MM I use on a AR15 so I can use the Red Dot and the iron sights at the same time. Now that is a great combo, if only you could work that out on the M1. Rear 300MM peep Red Dot mounted forward and then the front post.......targeting is very fast.

If you put a scope on an M1 Carbine you would be the only person I know that did. Don't be afraid of doing it if you want to make it Politically incorrect looking. You could scare more bad guys if you did that. I consider the M1 Carbine to be like a .357. They put scopes on handguns don't they???????
