Scope moving from recoil on 500 magnum

I recently purchased a S & W 500 Magnum pistol for a moose hunt and had the gun shop mount a Leupold scope with Warne quick detach scope rings. The scope moved forward in the rings after the first few shots. The gun shop then "lapped" the rings and tightened all screws. After a few practice sessions the scope began to slip forward again. The front ring's two halves are touching at the top and cannot be tightened any further. The rear rings have enough space to slip a card into. Did the shop "overlapp" one of the rings or is there another problem, other than strong recoil. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

it looks like the front rings need some material taken off so it will tighten some more...I guess this is what the lapping was. Also after tightening everything down you could try using a bit of BLUE loctite.

I would put one drop of blue loc-tite in each ring half, remount and tighten the scope, don't shoot it for 24 hours.

Yac and Tahoe's suggestions are good ones. A little tape can fill the void for a quickie, short term fix, the rings need to be lapped evenly, and blue loctite is a definite must.

You might do what I do, use two rings front and one rear. The scope I use is a Leupold with Badger Ordinance rings and it is rock solid as hell.

Badger Ordinance

I am unaware of any quick detach mounts that won't eventually shear off under the force of the 500.

While lapping will increase the contact area (and ensure a dead straight set of rings) it also increases the inside diameter of the rings. If the wings are up tight they may need a little taken off to increase the clamp force generated.

1. Get new rings, do not lap.
2. Instead, a bit, just a bit of sandpaer to rough up inside of rings
3. Line rings with liquid electrical tape, then tighten and install. Let dry and scrap off residue with toothpic
4. Under no circs loctite ring screws

Good luck with that, tahoe. I've got a pair of 500s, the 8 3/8" and the 4" and have considerable shooting experience with them, especially the longer barreled version as I've had it for a while longer. I wouldn't consider mounting a scope on either one and will be very curious to hear how yours turns out over a long period of time, assuming that you plan to shoot it some. An acquaintance of mine mounted a scope and it didn't last 50 rounds, but it wasn't a high quality one. What are you mounting? Keep us posted on how it survives......

I have used a couple of methods , The burris zee signiture rings are excellent and worth what they cost . The other method is to buy Double sided clear scotch tape , It is very thin and I have never had a scope slip on anything I have used it on .Trim the tape to be slightly undersize and it will be un seen .

Position the scope, rings, and base in such a way that the front of the scope bezel is butted tight against the rear of the forward ring.

No room for extra rings?

I've had to resort to epoxy in the rings on a few guns. Worked like a charm, just make sure it's straight. ;)

the problem with normal loctite is that

1) it does not spam/bridge gaps well
2) suspectable to breakage from shock

if you were able to "look inside" of a threaded bolt into a nut with loctite, the majority of the bonding strength comes from those points of contact of the bolt to the nut. very little comes from the large "areas" filled with the glue.

they do make "rubberiezed" versions which may work better.

I use a product called "E6000" for high vibration enviroments. The real key is to use as little as possible, but have full coverage.

Scope Moving

Thanks for all the suggestions. I returned the gun to the shop again and the guy who mounted the scope says a few of the ring screws loosened and suggested I check them after each outing. I noticed he left some lapping compound in the rings. He said this helps keep the scope from moving. I'm confused, it looks like a lubricant. Is this stuff supposed to be there?

rubberized coatings

Ive seen a small amount of gasket shalac or the rubberised liquid tape on the rings and screws - never seen a scope move.

Clean the rings and apply the green locktite. It is for slip fit joints, like scope mounts. It keeps the scope on my .500 in place.

With my 358 JDJ and 357 Herritt contenders I went with a weaver base that would alow me to use three rings. But after hundreds of rounds the Burris scope gave out.
