Scope mounts on Model 29 and Super Blackhawk

I have a S&W Model 29 in 44 mag and an Old Model Super Blackhawk. Currently they're sitting in the closet collecting dust. Lately, I've been consumed in reloading for long guns, trying to get the perfect load. I've found several but need to refocus.
I want to start shooting pistols again. I'm wondering what type of mount, rings, and scopes to get, fixed, variable or red dot. I don't know a thing about mounting scopes on a pistol and would like some suggestions. My only concer is modifying the pistols, as in drilling etc.
Thanks,
Bill

bill k,

While I have been out of the loop of shooting scoped handguns for a while, I did once mount a scope on a 6" 586 I had.

I'm pretty sure the mount wasa B-Square and it didn't require and drilling or mods.
If memory serves me right, I had to remove the rear adjustable sights (screws and all) then the thing had a little insert that slide up in the relief cutout for the rear sights.

The mount had clamp like thing that fit over the frame and in the back it had a special type of open screw that screwed down over the insert that came with the mount.

I do remember that it didn't work all that well, I had a lot of problems keeping the mount tight, I tried locktight and everything on the screws but the recoil from the .357 just kept working the mount loose. (within 50 rounds or so)

I finally gave up and put the sights back on it.

I'm sure there are better mounting systems out there now, that was years ago. Maybe somebody else can steer you in the right direction, but for me, it was a disaster. I can only imagine on a .44 mag the problem would be even worse.

Good luck!

Don't know about those two, I have a SBH I might want to scope one day. I do know however that a little bit of blue locktite helps with the scope mount problem......At least it did on my Mini-14........

If your Super Blackhawk is the older model with three screws holding the side plate to the frame, DO NOT DRILL & TAP IT, or otherwise mess with it !!! It is a highly desirable gun to Ruger afficionados, and its value would be greatly diminished...good shooting.

It's the old model 3 screw Super Blackhawk, it's not the flat-top but has adjustable rear mounts. I already decided not to drill or tap for that reason. I guess I'll still try to mount a scope on my Model 29 but can't locate a mount that doesn't require drilling.

www.edgecustom.com makes a "no gunsmith" mount for your Blackhawk.

I've not had good luck with clamp on mounts for N frame S&W. For about $30 most local gunsmiths will tap the top strap, so you can use a mount similar to the one sold by www.jackweigand.com

Works great!!

Custom Shop

Contact the S&W custom shop and see what is available for your 29. They should be able to help you.
I have a 29 with the 8 3/8" barrel, and shoot it open sight. Does well to 25 yards, and if I shot better it would handle 50 yards easily.
If the S&W custom shop can't help, check out some of the custom makers, like Gary Reeder. They should be able to help.

I've used a Weaver mount for my SBH for years that has worked well even with hot hunting loads, never has lossened from the day I installed it.
I had to remove the rear sight to install it but no drilling required and it can go back to original any time I choose.
I'm not sure if it will fit your old model as mine is a 1979 or so new model.

Final product

I know it's been awhile but I finally got a picture of the final product. It scares me how accurate I've become with a pistol. Plus it's a hoot to shoot.
