Scope mounts for FALs

I would like to know if there is a scope mount for FALs that allows the open sights to be used, particularly like the side mounts used on AKs and Dragunovs.

I recently bought a scope mount from Tapco (www.tapco.com). I paid $29.95, but I think they've gone up $10. Even at that, I thinks it's a good deal. It is made by Leapers (Chinese), so I didn't have high hopes for quality, but it seems to be very precisely machined and fits my STG58 perfectly. It replaces the original receiver cover, and fastens with several screws and plates that lock it down solidly. I haven't mounted a scope yet, but I'm confident it will work fine. I had considered the DSA and other mounts, which cost quite a bit more, but I'm glad I went with this one. Tapco is good to deal with, and even enclosed some extra screws and mounting plates (I've read that these sometimes strip - I didn't have a problem with them, but it was nice of Tapco to give me some extras just in case).

This mount is solid but not massive - it looks good on the rifle even without a scope installed (I've heard some of the others look kind of large and clunky). This Tapco/Leapers mount doesn't interfere with using the original iron sights at all (of course, unless you get some sort of see-through rings, they will block the iron sights when you install the scope). I didn't know it was a Leapers mount when I ordered it, so I didn't check other sources for these - you might find it for a little less elsewhere. But Tapco has a good reputation, and did throw in the extra hardware.

I have a DSA mount, solid very good. DOn't be suprised when the leapers mount go south. It is cheap and will not last.

I recently bought one of the Williams Arms mounts, very nice. Slide in like the normal top cover, no screws/plates to lock it in. Very nice machining and it goes on and off just like a top cover does. Seems to come right back to zero.

55.00 from williams. Worth the money

From what I understand the Williams is the only one that you can use iron sights with when it's on. The DSA and TAPCO are both good mounts but are too tall to see your sights.

Rock-n-Glock,

Clearly the Tapco/Leapers mount is cheaper (as in costs a lot less than the DSA). You may also be right about it not lasting - I guess time will tell. But it is a precisely machined and finished block of aluminum that fit my rife perfectly. This isn't exactly a high-tech item - it's a little tough to see what is going to fail. The only potential weak point I can see is that I've heard that the screws sometimes strip. Mine didn't have a problem, Tapco sent extras anyway, and I understand that they can be easily replaced at the local hardware store. As I said, I don't usually have much confidence in Leapers products, but in this case, I can't fault them. I've also read of quite a few posts from others who are happy with this mount. I'm sure the DSA mounts are also fine, but paying more doesn't always mean getting a better product (unless you believe advertising, name recognition, and higher profit margin make a product better).

Should we be discussing rings rather than mounts?

There are some rings that allow sight picture below the scope. Problem is that they are often not very stable and raise the scope up so high that it reduces the ability to get a good cheek weld with the stock.

There is the Millet rings which have notch sights as part of the top of the ring which could be an option.

If you are going to get a scope for your FAL, I would suggest a low power scope, perhaps even a 1-4x variable.

The DSA and TAPCO are both good mounts but are too tall to see your sights.

I can use the standard rear peep and front post just fine with the DSA mount on my STG58... no occlusion whatsoever from the rail.

I use the Leupold QD rings on mine. Easy on and off. They don;t stay exactly dead on when you remove and replace them, but usually within a couple of inches. HTH.

I was interested in mounting a PSOP 4X24 on a FAL. Dose anyone know if that would be possible, or if there is a scope similar to the PSOP thats is made for the FAL?

Why not a SUIT?

That's a great one for the task at hand. Night illumination of the reticle, too. Do a search for SUIT. Cross reference with my name.
