Scope & mounts for Enfield SMLE No.4 Mk1?

I like this old rifle but the rear peep sight does not work very well with my old eyes. I have seen a few mounts and scopes on-line, but not for this specific model. Anyone know where I can get a reasonably priced setup for this old girl?

The Lee Enfield has always been a bit recalcitrant about getting scoped, but I did a google search and came up with the following link for a No 4 MkI:

http://www.amazon.com/Advanced-Technology-ENF-0141-Enfield-Scope/dp/B000OFKFWE

It looks like you won't have to drill or tap the rifle to fit it up and that will be advantagous down the road should you ever decide to sell your No 4 (if it is still in unaltered condition). At a recent gun show, I was surprised at how much the value of nice Lee Enfields has gone up in the last few years.

I forget the company I can try searching around for it if you like, but I remember seeing a reproduction scope mount of the type used during WWII only it was available in 1 inch, and i think 30mm diameter for modern scopes.

Unfortunately somewhere along the way someone "sporterized" it, and it shows its age a bit, so it is not really a collectors piece. Mechanically it is perfect though.

After looking at the mount in your link, I have a hard time figuring how it attaches. I am not opposed to drilling and tapping if that is a better option. Thanks for the link.

EDIT: Polinese if you come across that info let me know. Thanks.

I have one of those reproduction mounts for the No 4 "T" rifle with 1" rings.

It requires the fitting of "pads" and also drilling and tapping the left side of the receiver in the manner that the sniper rifles (No 4 T) were.

I don't think that there is a manufacturer's name on the repro mount, but it is of good quality and it fits up to my No 4 T perfectly. I'll dig it out of the vault and look at it more closely the next time I have it open. If I find a company name on it I'll post it.

I thought those mounts were being made by Sarco, but it wasn't on their site at least I couldn't find it. No longer produced maybe? They did have mounts for the scoped used on the Sniper variant, as well as some of the actual scopes for sale.

Cad-Technik no-drill mount, Leopold QRW low rings and a Weaver Classic V 1X3 scope on my 1941 BSA Maltby No4 Mk1 w/two groove barrel and a repro cheek rest from Gun Parts Corp. The scope is a tad high, oh well. It shoots all most minute of angle with my reloads.

I have a Jungle Carbine with an S&K mount #794-001-045 from Brownells that sits lower and is more pleasing to my eye, no pic yet. http://www.brownells.com/.aspx/pid=12461/Product/NO-DRILL-NO-TAP-SCOPE-MOUNT

There are several companies making clamp on mounts for the No4 LE and I have tried most of them at one time or another. I like the S&K clamp on. It uses a cross screw at the rear sight mount and a wedge under the charger bridge to pull the mount tight to the receiver.

I have two of these on No4's and they have been rock solid for me. One big plus is they keep the scope fairly low without hampering case ejection.

You can do the repro No4(T) mounts with the side pads. These may require machining the sides of the receiver or pads in order to collimate the scope center line the the barrel center line.

There is varying quality on the repro pads and No4(T) mounts, some are very poorly made. The repro No32 scopes that are on the market are best used for display only. The cross hair moves with the .303 recoil.

Using a S&K mount and a Weaver K2.5 steel tube scope well replicate the look of the No4(T) fairly close.

Repro no4 (t) scope mounts

Madcratebuilder,

Where would you go to get the reproduction scope mount and mounting pads of the WWII No.4mk1(T). Where can I get one and about how much will it cost???

budd, this link has three pages and it shows the mount, pads and scope.

The repro scope looks good, but the three I have first hand experience with do not hold zero. They would be great for a safe queen or display rifle. If you want to do any serious shooting I would highly recommend a S&K mount with a Weaver steel tube, like the K2.5 or K4. You can find these Weavers on evil bay in excellent condition fairly cheap, 100-200 bucks max.

I have a set of No4(T) pads and mount, if you are interested, PM me.

Budd,

What may seem like a great idea at the time may turn into more trouble than it is worth. Pads require proper indexing to properly align with the barrel - this requires the painstaking care of a qualified smith and then the mount must also be correctly set up before you even get the scope on there.

Additionally using the pads would also require drilling into the receiver rendering the rifle now historically worthless. You will have an ersatz No4 sniper that will no longer have any collectors value, due to the drilling the receiver. For all the effort and how little you stand to gain, I would strongly recommend you go with a no drill mount ... but that's just me.

have a look at the link I posted above that discusses repro Enfield snipers using no drill mounts and see how good they can be - it is win, win ... if you drill it you can only lose out in the long run should you ever wish to sell it on.

Tiki.

I have tried two of the mounts that requires no machining just bolt on mounts the one by S&K and the "cad-tecnique" and I did not like either of them. Both seems to place the scope too high to be usable, even with the bolt on cheek piece on the butt-stock.

I don't think I would put the REPRO mount on either of my 2 pristine No.4-MK2Lee Enfields, but I do have a Gibbs Rifle Co. ersatz No.5 Jungle Carbine made with the No.4 barrel-action assembly, that could use a nostalgic touch of class that that could come from an old fashioned scope mount. Plus getting the scope lower to the action for a better cheek-weld.

budd, you well drop the scope about .250" with the LE mount vs the S&K.

The older S&K mounts used the Leupold style rings and gives you a lower scope than the Picitinny/Weaver rail style. Maybe .125" or so.
