Scope mounting: Rail MOA and rings height ?'s

I just purchased a few new toys and have a few questions.

The rifle we are dealing with is a Remington 700 SPS tactical in .223.

I bought a scope i would like to mount it on a 1 piece picatinny rail.

My scope is a Burris xtr 312. It has a 50mm front. I want to mount it as close to the rifle as possible. Im shooting a .223 and will never shoot past 500yrds

My question is: Rails come in all different MOA and rings come in all sizes. I want to use the Burris tactical rings but need to match up a rail and ring that will work together. How high does a 15 moa rail sit up? a 20moa? and a 0moa? I am under the impression in order to fit my scope i need everything to equal 1" a 0 moa rail is 1/4 in and would leave me with a 3/4 height ring?


Just confused about the moa on rails for the most part. want to make sure i order once and correct.

Minute of Angle is a measure of angle expressed in 60ths of a degree. That isn't much, and since the front is lower than the rear, the higher the moa, the more it will tilt the bell of the scope down and the rear up. A 15 minute rail has the back end elevated 15/60 of a degree higher than the front to bias the sight for longer range than a standard zero degree rail. Many scope desn't have enough adjustment to get to longer ranges without that help. I have a 20 minute scope base on my 10FP to enable me to shoot it out to 1000 yards. Without it, 1000 yards is beyond the scope's adjustment range.

For 500 yards you should not need it with most scopes, and a zero degree rail will work fine. Bullet drop is around 10-12 moa at 500 yards, typically. Most scopes will do around 15 moa of adjustment or more but some will be right on the edge with it. At 1000 yards, the drop, if you use a low BC bullet, will be around 30 moa or more. Enough to get beyond the usual scope adjustment range.

I looked up your Burris, and it claims a maximum adjustment of 90. I assume that is clicks, which means about 15 moa, so you should be fine to 500 yards.
