Scope mounting problem

I mounted a scope on my son's 10/22 and tried to zero it today. With the elevation turned all the way to the 'lower' end it's still about 12" high.
This scope was on this rifle at one time and worked fine, had it mounted on a different one for a while and it worked OK there too. Using the same mounts & rings that I had used before.
I'm guessing I'll need to put a shim it the rear mount, or is there something I'm overlooking?

MOUNT

PROBLEM.........CHECK THEM................see if they are up to snuff.........
Possibility the scope went south on you also..........
Not to demean you, or your abilities.........but could you perchance have the WINDAGE on top......instead of Ele??

Just for the heck of it try moving the front ring to the rear and the rear ring to the front. Stranger things have happened.

If you do shim you should shim the front not the rear. Shimming the rear will raise the point of impact and you want to lower it. Also if it's a two piece mount you'll need to be carefull so as not to bend the scope tube and definately lap the rings.

Nope, left the rings alone, they were still in the same position they were in when the scope was first mounted.
Found out the reason it wasn't coming to zero was......
Nah, too embarrasing. I don't want to talk abut it anymore.

Sorry, I will sometimes admit ignorance but try to never put it in writing. :D
Before anyone jumps to conclusions however, the windage and elevation knobs were in the correct positions. Believe me, if the error were that complicated I would've admitted to it!
