i just got a one piece Leupold STD for my Savage 10fp, did i make the wrong choice, thats all the place had for 10fp, but shoul di return them for something differnt ?

I try to avoid adding unnecessary weight, so I prefer the Weaver-style mounts and rings. They aren't as pretty as Conetrol, but the Weaver stuff is a lot cheaper.

I'm not familiar with the Leupold mount, but the primary strength is the number of screws holding the base(s) to the rifle. Most one-piece mounts I've seen are three-screw; two-piece systems use four. This gives 1/3 more shear strength to resist recoil.

Purely opinionated opinion.

Get something different----the rear windage adjustment screws are un-neccesary(sp?) these days---if you do need them you've got big problems with your scope or rifle. They also don't contribute to the strength of the mount.

The Leupold base screws have been pretty crappy lately---between my buddy and myself we have turned off screw heads on 3 different rifles (one of which the gunsmith had to get the screw out)---this was finger pressure with the enclosed wrench---not even coming close to cranking down on them. They were returned for something better. Leupold mounts were given a 2nd and 3rd chance and were still junk----there are a lot of better choices out there----most of them cost more though.

Talley and Warne come to mind first---Weaver style work well too----but avoid the actual Weaver brand rings.
