I recently purchased a Savage 10FP in 308. i have a harris bipod on it, the tilt kind that goes to 9 " :) i am hung on wether to get a Leupold 3-9x40 Vari X II Tactical, or a Springfield 2nd Generation, non illuminated reticle 4.5-14x56, with Govt. Reticle. i know i know, im a retard, TAKE THE LEUPOLD ITS BETTER BY 100%, i just wanted to ask your oppinoin and see what expieriences you have had with Springfields. i hear the AO and the actual glass reticle falls out after time. lol, is this true? thanks guys

My opinion.....the reticle on the Springfield is just WAY too cluttered. I'd go with the Leupold with mildots. As far as quality goes.....can't say i've heard all that much about the springfields, and and only praise for the Leupolds.

Which scope?

I own both brands. Both have given me excellent performance. I've used both on hunting rifles from the humid heat of the FL everglades to eighteen inches of snow in the CO mountains. I can't give poor marks to either brand. I would say that the type of shooting you intend to do will dictate what type of scope you need. Just my two cents. I'm sorry I can't be more discerning between the two.

I have your exact rifle with a Leupold Vari-X III Tactical 3.5-10x40 M1LR and it's perfect in every way. I'm not a scope expert and I know that there are better, but I don't see any reason to spend more than $800 on a scope. The Leupold that you mentioned will cost you less than mine and probably perform about as well.

Having owned MANY different brands of scopes in my shooting life, do yourself a favor. Take the Leupold...you will never regret it!
Just my 2cents worth.

thanks guys, ive decided on the Leupold 3.5-10 or 4.5-14, not positve yet, most likely the 3.5-10, by the way, i was looking at the Nikon Monarch scopes at a place called Arizona Sportsmans today, and they were very odd, the AO wouldnt even move lol, just thought id add that fluke. thanks again

A friend of mine has the Nikon Monarch 6.5-20 on his AR. Its a nice scope. Great glass, great features. The Power selector ring in the back is really stiff and difficult to move though. His AO seems fine. Seems to loosen up after a few turns.

Good Luck

I own the monarchs and the vari XII both on the 3-9X40 and believe me I´m not fighting with my money, eyes closed I would pick the leupold over the nikon only because of the warranty, wich by the way I have not used either.
both scopes are on a custom .270 win and the other on a model 700 adl in .270.

check how much money are you willing to spend on the leupold and compare to the monarch´s you will be surprised!

.02 usd.

The Nikon's are great scopes, but stay away from the Buckmasters model. I've had Nikons on all my rifles until my last one. I just had to break down and buy a Leupold. It's a great scope. But do yourself a favor, spend the little extra and get the Vari-X III. It has "click" adjustments for elevation and windage. The Vari-X II doesn't. I know there's thousands of II's out there with happy folks, but on a rifle used for precision shooting, I want "positive click adjustments"!!!

Check out the newest edition of RIFLE Magazine (Dec. I think). It has a really good article on optics in the field, by expert hunter/shooter John Barsness. Scopes, spotting scopes, and binocs. He has some good advice on optics in general, and some brand recommendations. FWIW
