Scope for Shots out to 300 yds

What power and or scope would you recomend for shots from distances of 50yds to 300 yds., I plan on puting it on a Browning A-Bolt .338 Win Mag. My current choice is between a Leupold Vari XIII 3.5 10 x50 and 3.5-10x40. What are your opinions?

It really depends on your Eyes. I can hit Sporting clays at 300yds with My Winchester Model 70 with a 3-9x40 Leupold scope. But I couldn't do it with less than 9x. I don't think you need to go with a 50mm scope with the gun you've got. I find the type of Reticle I use, makes more of a difference, than the Magnification out to 300yds. I've seen some fancy $700 tactical scopes that were all full of Lines and fat reticles, that trying to hit a 3inch object at 300yd was harder.

Either of your choices should be fine, but pay attention to the type of reticle. The standard Leupold Duplex might be a little coarse for the longer shots, but they make a "fine duplex' that might be a good choice.

MSPHUNTER,

Consider the Leupold 4.5-14x50 A/O. Here's why. What does the 3.5-10 have that the 4.5-14 does not? It has 3.5x and there's not a lot of difference between 3.5x and 4.5x. Now, what does the 4.5-14 have that the 3.5-10 does not? It has 11x, 12x, 13x and 14x. These are the powers that you will most likely be using with a .338 at 300 yards.

Also consider a 50mm objective if you go with the 4.5-14, it gives you a larger exit pupil that you will need on the higher powers.
