Scope for rifle, <=$400?

I'm looking to scope my Mossberg 100 ATR in .30-06, and will be shooting from bench at paper at both 50 and 100 yards. The rifle will serve no other purpose for the foreseeable future.

The cost of the rifle is about $300.

I will spend not ONE PENNY MORE than $400, including tax and/or shipping.

Can I get a recommendation on a scope for this purpose?
 
Take a look at Nikon. I've been very impressed with their quality and they are decently priced. I just bought a Monarch 3x9 and it's one of the best scopes I've seen. As a matter of fact, I bought it over Leupold and Zeiss and they were what I planned to buy.
 
Take a look at the Leupold fixed power scopes. I have several of them including three FXIII 6x42 models. These are uncomplicated, trouble-free and very durable scopes. List price for the FXIII 6x42 most places is $379.00
 
Look at used equipment. I bought a 3-9x Redfield "used"-$189. Works great.
At a gun show bought an old Weaver V9. $25 or so. Fits in the rings fine, mechanically sound, optics clear.
 
Redfields. Go with a 3 X 9 Redfield. Decent scope. Decent price. I used one in Viet Nam on an XM-21 sniper rifle. It never let me down over there in that muddy, swampy hell hole. Tune the scope to your ammo, eyesight and rifle and you'll be happy. Heck, get TWO Redfield scopes for the price of one Leupold or Nikon. Get one in 4 X 12 too just for the fun of it. You'll love them.
 
I recently picked up a Simmons Prohunter 6-18x40 for $150, and I'm very impressed with it. The eye releif is a little longer than most scopes I've used before, though. If you dont want to spend alot of money, I'd reccomend it to anyone.
 
Probably the best buy would be a used Leupold in good condition, say a VX-II in 3-9 power, or one in a fixed power. Leupold has a lifetime warranty regardless of original buyer, that is miles ahead of the competition.

How about a Leupold Rifleman scope for $250 and less? NIB

cant beat the warranty....They will even fixed a used scope even if it is not the original owner.
 
I wasn't thinking about it, but a Bushnell Banner Dusk to Dawn is a nice scope that should cost under $200. I've got a 6x18 on my 7mm Rem Mag and it's a great scope, clear, pulls in a lot of light and decently priced. It's not the scope my Nikon is, but it sounds like the right price for what you plan on using it for.
 
Let us know how the mossberg 100 ATR shoots (I have been looking at one for a truck gun).

As for a good under 400 scope I would look at a 3200 Bushnell, or a Nikon Monarch UCC. These are excellent scopes and can be had for well under your price of 400 or less for a scope. Check out www.SWFA.com they have excellent prices and awsome service. Also, might want to check out the supersniper line of scopes there as well. SWFA bought the rights from TASCO and are now making them to the original specs again and are very good.

The problem with the Rifleman series is that you are getting a $75 scope and paying $100 extra for the Leupold name and warranty. Leopold scopes really don't start getting really high quality until you get to the VariXII series.

I swapped out a Simmons ($60) 3x9 on my 30-30, with Rifleman and really couldn't tell much difference. Only good thing I guess, is that I got the Rifleman on clearence ($120) at Wal-Mart.

I agree with Doyle, go for the Leupold VXII or maybe a Nikon. Just my $.02
 
Weaver makes a good quality economy scope.
But we're talking about 100yds and in. Heck anything will do at that range. Don't spend more than $200.
 
Redfields? Not today. Sadly, they are NOT the scopes they were until the 70s or so. Bean counters got control of the company and destroyed the quality of the scopes and service in pursuit of profit. It remains to be seen what the recent new management (Meade) will do with the line but they will have a tuff time making up for the damage done by the previous management.
