Scope for Nephew's First .22 Rifle

I promised to buy my nephew a .22 rifle if he kept his grades up and got accepted into college. Well guess what, he did his part and now it's my turn. We went shopping today and found a used Ruger 1022 Sporter in excellent condition. As I have owned one of these for the past 28 years the selection of the rifle was a no brainer.
My reason for posting is I need some advice on a scope for this rifle. I have always had luck with Redfield and Leupold but they are out way out of the price range.
Any insight into a decent 4 power scope in the $50 range to mount on this 1022 would be appreciated.
As always thanks in advance for the response.

I wouldn't recommend one of the 3/4" so-called ".22 scopes". You could try your luck at a gun show for a used Weaver K-4. Otherwise, the middle-of-the-line Tascos would do, or similarly in the Simmons or Burris lines.

I've used fixed 4-powers on everything from .22s to '06s, and did just fine with them.

You're a good uncle, I had one and he was a blessing.

I have had good luck with Tasco and Simmons. Consider a 3x9x40 if you can work it into your budget. Simmons sells reconditioned scopes--I picked up a 3x9x32 and Big Five last week for $29 plus $21 for rings. Get the high rings.

Good luck.

If you cant find a good one locally at a fair price check on E-bay or Auction Arms or GunBroker. If I was looking and found a good used Weaver K-4 or K-6 I would buy it in a heartbeat!

I would echo Ledbetter's comments. As a matter of fact, I have a 3-9x32 Simmons on my 10/22. It is just the ticket. I started with the iron sights, moved up to a .22 4X scope, and finally to this scope. I'll stop here. It's just right - not too little and not too much. :)

I have a buddy w/ a Leupold compact on a 77/22HB and another w/ a Simmons 3X9 32AO 22MAG that we both like better. I've seen them under / at $50. I also recommend drop in replacement hammer/ sear from Power Custom. Nice crisp trigger.

Why not a red dot scope?

E. Brown Arthur Co has some Tasco Propoint 20mm red dot scopes for $39 and all you have to do is spend $12 for some 22 rings.

One year warranty and you have a respectable scope for about $55 including shipping. Just bought one for my Marlin Papoose 22 rifle.
