Ok, I got a bushy 20" HBar with the A3 sights (the removeable carry handle). I want to put a scope on it but i dont know whether i need to by mounts or rings or whatnot to get the scope on. Because its a flattop do i need mounts and rings? Tell me what i need to get the scope on and what brand or what kind to get. Thanks

Mine's not a flat-top, but I know you can get rings to mount to it. Go for the best, buy a Trijicon Acog, they make the MM05 mount to attach these to flatties.

well how much do you want to spend?

the chinese rubber coated "Delta" scopes are a cheap price

the colt style 3x20s are cool
the chinese knockoffs are OK:

the good stuff i buy from SWFA:

The AR is designed to line up with the scope at the same center as the iron sights.
Most flat toppers use an elevated riser to get the glass set up correctly
http://www.bushmaster.com/shopping/scopes/ here is bushies online scope area
http://www.dpmsinc.com/ has a bunch of risers
The mil spec stuff is A.R.M.S. SWAN http://www.armsmounts.com/mounts.html#38

If you mount a scope on the carry handle then the shooter has to raise up off the stock to sight the target.

The delta cheek piece raises the cheek weld but makes using the iron sights impossible.

for a really slick setup  look at armalite's site at their onepiece scopemount w/rings. most rings will mount your scope too low and you'll need a riser anyway.

you might want to look at the "turkey scope" from bushnell, 1.75x4 magnification with a circular recticle within crosshairs. i've got mine mounted as far forward as it will go in "semi-scout" style...very quick acquisition as shoulder the weapon :D

Since yours is a flattop, you may not need a cheekpiece. You will need rings though and the height of the rings will be determined by the scope objectives.

First, a regular rifle scope of 8" or greater may interfer with the charging handle. A few folks handle this by buying an extension for the charging handle and others by using higher rings. It all depends on how low the scope is and how wide the eye objective is.

Personally, I'd go with a red dot type sight. The Aimpoint MD/ML are good and will mount straight onto the rails. They're short enough that you won't have interference with the charging handle. Further, you can also buy a flip down rear sight and still use the front iron sight even if the Aimpoint is mounted.

MDLewis,

I've got a 16" CAR A4 flattop (M&A kit on ASA receiver) using the Tasco 3x9x40 Mil-Dot scope mounted on the Armalite riser base with integral rings. This works just fine, but is still a bit lower line of sight than the iron sights are on an A2. I really have to get a low, hard cheek weld to see through the center of the scope.

In order to use a scope on a flattop AR with regular rings you will have to use either a riser base of some kind under the rings, or use some of the high rise "see through" rings that are normally meant to allow using the iron sights on a bolt rifle.

If you elect to go that way, the Armalite is a good solid system. I like mine a lot.

BTW, using this rifle earlier this week.... from a bench I shot the smallest 5 shot 100 yd. group I've ever made. Sierra 52 gr. HPBT match over 23.0 gr. AA2200 into .582". This breaks my previous record of .640", done 6 months ago with the same load in my 20" A2 & iron sights (Model 1 Sales kit on ASA receiver).

Sorry guys, hadda' brag a little... ;-)

I have the exact same gun as you, and am considering my options as well.
I have narrowed it down to a Trijicon Reflex II with the Amber Triangle or the Aimpoint Red dot. I like the fact that the Reflex II doesn't require batteries.
Either way I'm looking to spend about $300 with Weaver mounts.
Somebody can correct me if I'm wrong, but I think you don't need to remove the front sight to use this set up.
Can anybody verify this?

On my 16" AR with fixed carrying handle, I have the Aimpoint ML red dot sight. The sight is mounted (via the aimpoint handle mount) right above the handguard. If my batteries die, I can still use my iron sights by looking through the Aimpoint.

BTW, I also have a Colt 20" Heavy Barrel w/Fixed Handle. It sports the rubber armored Tasco 3x9 via a Colt scope mount unit. Since I mounted the cheekpiece, I can't use the iron sights anymore.

Would a leupold be a good scope for my AR? I want to be able to use it as a long range rifle. Like about out to 550 meters. What kinda groups could i expect with some Federal 62 grain? Cause i got a 1/9 twist. Thanks

There are many Leupolds that would work for you. I would suggest about 3.5-10 or a 4.5-14 power for a good all around scope on it. A red dot is not going to get you out to 500 yards. One of my AR's is set up just like that. Flat top 20" with an Armalite mount and a 4.5-14 Leupold tactical with a duplex reticle. It works great.

The Armalite one piece scope mount, in my opinion, is the best way to go. It positions the scope well and eliminates the need for a riser piece for the cheek weld. It also releases quickly and re-zeroes well when put back on.

How well your rifle will shoot out to 500 yards is dependent on a lot of variables. 1/9 twist works pretty well for long distances but you might find you have problems with 62 grain bullets. People shooting out to those distances with AR's tend to like the heavier weight bullets, say 75 or even 80 grain. An 80 grain bullet will not feed through the magazine though, so it is a "load one round at a time" option only.

Best thing you can do is try your rifle with 62 grainers and see what happens. Your rifle might shoot great with them and get the results you are looking for.

By the way, what kind of results are you looking for?

Willy, Im not exactly sure of the type of groups i can get at about 500 yards. But I was checking out a Leupold Vari XII 3.5-9x40 i think that is what it was. But yeah i think 62 is the highest grain i can get into my mag. Im not sure what a good group for an AR at 500 yards would be. I just want to trick it out. Im gonna get the free floating handguard (aluminum) and im gonna get a harris bipod for it also. And then i just need a scope. What do you think about the rifle that im trying to make though? I kinda want to make it into a badass little assault/sniper rifle. I suppose for that type of distance that a Federal 55 grain just wont cut it? Thanks

Concur that the red dot is not the way to go if you're into target shooting. Go Leupold and you won't be sorry.

BTW, DPMS makes a plastic handguard which is a free float unit. It looks just like the one on your Colt and if you ever want to shoot in CMP matches, it's legal.
