just bought a rem 700 sps tactical. want to learn some of the in's and outs of longer (not longest) range shooting thinking of maybe changing stock. but really looking on some advise about optics to pair it with. So far i've been told variable over fixed, 4-16 or 3-15 50mm if possible. Like i said I MAY spend more $$ some day on top end rig. but for now want to reach out 700-800 have Weaver 3-15x50 tactical, bushnell elite 6-24x50 and leupold mark 4 4.5-14 lr/t as some choices. will spend maybe 700-800 tops if have to. If I can do what i want for less I'm all for it. I have learned that forums can be invaluable for brainstorming/info collecting then it's about sifting out the b.s and such. Appreciate any info you provide

I think the Leupold is good - I have used a VX-III 4.5-14X. It is a scope of very reasonable size and weight. I also have an Elite 4000 6-24X from back in the days when it still carried the Bausch and Lomb name. It is on a Rem 700 VLS in .308 and is very good glass, but is considerably heavier and bulkier than the Leupold. I don't know about the Weaver.

I've been really impressed with the Weaver Super Slam EBX that I bought back in January. Really good glass for the money I paid for it at $329.00 from Natchez. The Bushnell Elites are great too, better than the Leupold VXIII's that I own, especially in hunting situations.

The Leupold LR/T is a wonderful optic. I have one on one of my compitition guns and it has proved faultless. The side focus is a major plus as well.

I have a Nikon Monarch 4x16x40 on a Rem 700 Tac that shoots sub MOA all day. Today just put a Nikon Buckmaster 6x18x40 fine dot on a CZ .223. Have yet to get to the range but sure looks like a nice scope. OP if you have the Houge overmolded stock it took me awhile to get use to mine.

Check out the Vortex line in that price range man, they sure make a fabulous scope. The quality is there along with the big name dudes for sure.

If it's paper-punching in day time, I don't see any need for a 50mm objective lens.

I've had no difficulty in sub-MOA at the 500-yard range at my house, using the 10X magnification setting on my Simmons 44Mag.

No doubt there are better scopes than that Simmons, but it doesn't take a bunch of scope to be effective to 500 yards...

Nikon Monarch for the $450 range if you are trying to save a little money. Look at the Vortexes, Sightron SII Big Sky or probably a VXIII if you can spend in the $700 range. The scopes you mentioned are good scopes, too. In general I feel you can always get the same quality of a Leupold at a cheaper price.. I think you are paying for their name. Based on my research and reading reviews, I am shortly going to be buying a Vortex Viper PST for $700. That's the one I would probably recommend to you.

You always want to spend as much as you can on your scope, IMO. If and when you decide to sell the rifle, you take the scope off and keep it for the next rifle. If you look at used rifles on gunbroker (or wherever) the scopes that comes on rifles are usually Simmons or Tasco. You don't find nice scopes for sale all that often.

I personally like the 3-15, 4-16x range but you could get away with 10-12 just as easily for 600 yards (my guess on what you meant by "longer")

Go with the Leupold Mk IV if that's in your price capability. Its a great scope.

You can say what you want about other scope mfgs, but its a crap shoot. They can be good or bad. You also get what you pay for.

Leupold is almost always good, and it has a solid lifetime warranty which means something as Leupold is going to be there.

I have one of their Rimfire scopes on an AR (mostly shooting 50 yards for groups) and it works great for that, and Leupold was willing to say it was fully capable of being shot on an AR. No mushing around, just yes you can.
