Scope dilema!

Hi,
I'm shopping for a scope for a 22" .308. I'm looking at Leupold vari-xII and Nikon Buckmaster. I'm leaning toward the Leupold because of their reputation on these boards for durability and better service...Is there anything wrong with the Nikon?

I'm on a buget ant the highest power Leupold I can afford is a Vari-xII 3-9x40, but I can afford a higher power Nikon. Can you shoot acurrately to 400 yds with a 3-9x40 scope or should I go with a higher power Nikon?

I will be using it for target and deer in California.

Thanks!

On a budget???? Go to Ebay, under hunting, then optics/scopes and look at all the good deals offered there.I see 3x9x40 vari X Leupolds sell for $200 all the time...of course they are new with lifetime warranty. Also have some nice Nikon Buckmasters/Monarch's also.I myself am drooling over the Simmons Aetec 3.8x12x44 going for $134.99+$8.99 shipping.

Go with th Leupold----had a Buckmaster---repeat "had"----Not even close to what the Leupold is for about the same money. A 3X9 should be plenty for what your purposes are.

Agree with Point Blank. I've bought many excellent scopes (primarily Leupold) from eBay, AuctionArms, and Gunbroker.com. With the warrantee on the Leupolds, second hand is great.

If you're shooting deer-sized critters, 3X or 4X will do just fine, within the range of your gun. Heck, 4X will do on coyotes to 200-300 yards. 7X to 9X is nice for really small stuff.

I've got a couple of Vari-X IIs in 2X7 & 3X9; they work just great. My Simmons 44 Mag has given good service for some four years. (A dealer has told me the newest 44 Mags aren't as good, but I have no experience on that.)

I rarely use the higher magnifications when hunting...

I'm cleaning up a bunch of heirloom guns right now, and I notice a 1.5-4.5 Weaver on my uncle's old Win. Model 100 in .308. He killed a good number of deer with that rig...

FWIW, Art
