Scope Combo Packages

My recent rifle experience has consisted of plinking with Ruger 10-22’s on the in-laws' land with my sons and nephews. The government was kind enough to put me through basic rifle school in my younger years, but almost all of my training was conducted with iron sights. I am interested in picking up a .308, and have noticed that many of the choices are offered as “scope combos.” Are the scopes that are packaged with the Remington 770, Remington 700, Savage Axis, or Mossberg 100ATR by the big box retailers (Academy, Bass Pro, Cabelas, Gander Mountain) any good? Are these scopes actually paired with the rifle by the manufacturer, or are they chosen by the retailer? Any opinions on the quality of the scope combos for these, or similar .308’s would be appreciated.

Speaking just from the Savage side--They are scopes you would get at Walmart for maybe $20.00 to $40.00. Something that is do able, but you would want to swap it out very soon.

There are some exceptions. Savage has put some pretty good Nikons on some of their packages. Weatherby is putting a fairly good Redfield on the Vanguard packages. There may be other "better" packages that I can't remember now, but there's some exceptions.

One rule of thumb, if the scope has a Remington "R" on it, or the rifle manufacturer's lable of some kind on it, it's probably a $40 scope as mentioned and you'll not keep it for long.

One of the LGS offered the Howa/Zeiss package last month for an out-the-door price of $825. Terrific rifle Howa 1500 with the Hogue pillar-bedded stock, with a very nice 3x9x42 Zeiss Terra 3X scope. I would recommend that set-up as a slam dunk all day, everyday.

I recently (black friday) bought a a stainless model 700 ADL package in 308 from Dicks Sporting Goods for $499.00 with a $50.00 rebate, it ended up $449.00. I agree the scope is probably a cheap one, but it is serviceable. Looks like maybe a cheap Simmons, but it'll do for me for now.

NTG- You are right. I got a 22-250 in the Model 11 International Trophy Hunter package and it had a Nikon BDC on it. very nice scope

The new packages ruger is offering in the American line of rifles will be equipped with Redfield revolution scopes. Not a bad set up by any means.

As I believe. Weapon manufactures are quite similar to auto manufactures. Where ever they can buy quality spec parts and components cheapest are those who they contract/buy from. As far as entry marketed scopes its base & rings when factory pre-installed. Great add on feature to promote a factory ready-to-go weapon without their customer needing to endure any additional pressured sales pitches.
