Scope choice

I took the Anschutz MPR64 to the range yesterday and shot some Lapua Standard, Lapua Center X and Wolf Target ammo at both 100 yards and at 50.

I have a Leupold 6.5-20X 50mm scope. The problem is with the side focus. I can barely get the target in focus because the parallax adjustment goes from 50 yds. to infinity but does not go any closer. I am not comfortable because I like to be able to go out of focus from both directions to make sure I can get the target in focus as well as possible. I also try to approach clear focus from the same direction each time. That is from near to far. I have attached a photo of the 50 yard target that I shot. 5 shots with Lapua Center X and it really is the best I have ever shot. I went to the gunsmith and they have a supply of Lapua Midas that I bought to see if it is any better than what I have.

I am looking for scope advice. Are any of you shooting with scopes that focus any closer than 50 yds.? I am convinced this rifle has a whole lot of untapped potential but I am concerned that the scope I have will not let me see that.

Any advice would be appreciated. I never thought the .22lr bug would bite so hard:rolleyes:

I have a Leupold 2-7 rim fire that does really well. the 7 power may be a bit shy at 100 depending on eyes.

I don't shoot 22LR at those range but it looks like you do.

Leupold offers some options that might get you cross bars to deal with the serious trajectory aspects at 100

Does the entire ocular bell screw and unscrew? - that's the focus. This works together with the side parallax eliminator.

If so, the procedure to follow is:

1. Get an object at a *known* distance, say 50 yards (tree, target stand, anything). Select a "middle" power magnif. (13-14x in your case).
2. Set the side focus for that distance.
3. THEN, and only then, start with the ocular bell focus (or "fast focus" if it has one), until the object looks perfectly in focus to your eye and lock it in.

Then you've just "synched" your actual focus to your "side focus" parallax eliminator, and can now change to side focus to match the actual distance of any target and it should look in focus or pretty close. Make sure that you're wearing your eyeglasses when you do this procedure, obviously, if you wear glasses when shooting.

I'm not 100% certain, but I think this is the way to solve that.

I have no experience with scopes like this.

Leupold makes a VX3 EFR 6.5-20 x40.
Maybe Leupold could reset the parallax range on your scope.
Hawke makes scopes that are supposed to focus down to 10 yards.

Thanks for the replies. I do have the 2-7 Nikons on two other rifles and they seem to work fine. I was looking for a little more magnification. I can get a slightly better visual by dialing the Leupold down to about 12X and fiddling with the eyepiece. It is still pretty "iffy" getting the reticle and the target both focused at 50 yards. I can better the factory test target at fifty yards. Have come close at 100 yards. Obviously a lot more can go wrong to mess up your groups at longer ranges. It was nice and calm yesterday but my groups would not come together. Even at 100 yards, the Center X performed the best.

I may just switchout the Leupold for the Nikon and try again next week.
