Scope and rings for Rem 597?

Since I broke my $10 4x15 POS scope this weekend at the range (windage knob went flying when I was trying fix the scope after the same knob stopped moving the POI, so I decided it wasnt worth the effort and went to the iron sights), I'm in need of a low priced scope for my Rem 597 .22lr. I was looking at the Remington-made 1" weaver base scope mount and a scope along the lines of the Bushnell Sportsman 3-9x32 (manufacturer's model 721393 at CTD). This will be my first set of optics purchased for anything other than paintball guns, so I have no clue who makes quality rings or what type I will need for a 32-40mm objective.

I'm looking at spending about $10 on the base, $10-20 on the rings and then $45 or so on the scope. Can Walmart beat Cheaper Than Dirt's prices on scopes and stuff? They beat CTD out on some stuff even before shipping.

I use my Rem 597 for plinking (on the order of 250 rounds every other weekend, at about 33yds) and an occasion squirrel or bunny, if that helps.

Come on people, its the same as scoping a 10/22, just a different receiver and base. Can anyone make some suggestions?

I've had the 597 since last summer, when my wife bought it for me for father's day (first gun she ever bought). I have a Remington base and low Weaver rings with a Simmions 1.5-5 compact scope on it. It has a 28mm objective on it.

This little gun will out shoot my HBAR 10/22 everyday of the week, I am glad the Remington has finially come out with a excellent 22, after the POS Viper.

6mm

6mm: Yeah, I noticed the accuracy of the gun when I was sighting it in. Do you use Rem Gold dots, by chance? I was shooting the Winchester copper plated stuff at first, it wasnt super accurate (~3" groups), but it fed 100% and had a small hollow point cavity. I ran out of the Winchester and gave the Gold Dots a try and I've found the HP gold dots don't always feed correctly (like 1 in 20-30 will either fail to feed or stovepipe after firing). With the Gold dots, i was shooting ragged holes about 1" in diameter at 33yds with 10 shots, which I wasnt able to move around due to my POS scope crapping out on me. I prefer the accuracy of the gold dots to the reliability of the Winchesters.

How often do you take your gun out of the stock to clean it? I just clean it from the muzzle and spray some CLP around with the little red tube extension.

Glad you brought this up, Kharn

I've had a POS scope on my 597 since I bought it, and the rifle sure deserves better. I've been thinking of upgrading for some time, but I haven't found the right deal yet. Frankly, I've actually given some thought to spending real money on optics - this is a fine little rifle.

My 597 stinks up the place with the Winchester plated stuff, but it is absolutely amazing with the Remington green box stuff. It does very well with almost everything else - that Winchester just doesn't seem too great (my other .22s don't like it, either). What do you guys load for bunnies? Stingers and Quik-Shok run pretty accurate out of my 597, but I've never taken game with it.

Kharn, re: cleaning. I've run over 6k rounds through my 597, and I've yet to take it off the stock to clean. I started to do it once, but it was pretty much a pain in the rear, so I let it slide until later (a "later" that has still not arrived). I run a solvent-soaked patch around in there every once in a while, and I don't really have problems. One thing that's amazed me is that I've never broken a magazine (only own 2) in all those rounds. Being that they're kinda cruddy plastic, I thought that was a certainty, but I guess not.

I bought a Simmons 22 mag 3-9x32 from Midway for $55 and that included rings albeit cheap ones. The scope is perfect for the gun but I have not tried it out yet but the 22 mag series seems to work perfect on 22s (my dad has one on his 10/22).

Good deal on a nice little scope perfect for the job.

Here's my .02 on rings. I've used the cheapo tasco, bushnell and WalMart's Weaver rings that you find as freebies from catalog retailers. Don't let the quality Weaver name fool you, those thin aluminum rings can be real crap. I had to replace a pair a few months ago as the steel attachment screw had stripped out the threads in the aluminum base. Honestly, of all the bases and rings I have on my rifles, the Leupold bases and rings are the best. Trick is, you're talking $20 for the base, and another $20 for the rings. They are solid however.
Overall for a deal at the money level you requested, I'd try www.midwayusa.com , Natchez shooters supply or the Sportsmans Guide. Those three always have good sales on entry level scopes.
