Schmidt: A "Yugoslavian AK" question...

I'll cut to the chase, I've really only handled an "AK" twice in my life. Contrary to by beliefs and what I had been told the rifle had pretty good "fit and finish", was VERY reliable, and I found I could hit a 200 yard target with relative ease.
I later found out that the AK I used was a Yugoslavian AK-47.
One thing that stuck in my mind was the beauty of the rifle.
Last year I got a chance to fire a SAR-2 (Romanian) it was fairly inexpensive, BUT I noticed it heated up, and after a couple of thirty round magazines (NOT rapid fired) it started to "heat up", even through the wooden grips.
One thing that I like about the AK is the 7.62X39mm round and the abundance of it currently on the market. So I'm looking for an AK chanmbered in this round.
My thoughts however always come back to that Yugolslavian AK (looked like it had a thicker barrel than the SAR-2).
Does anyone know if you can still get them, how much would it cost for a "PC" one and if not what would a good replacement be?

Thanks for the reply!,

Jon

For a good, "original" eastern bloc AK I would suggest a Bulgarian SLR100. Of course you can get the new ones with black polymer furniture that everyone is raving about, but I like the refinished ones with the war-used wooden furniture.

From what I know, Yugoslav AKs are some of the best around and pretty hard to get.

Not sure if Gordon Tech is still building SLR100s, but they did a great job on my girlfriends...

BTW, AKs with wooden furniture will get smokey relatively quick - I love it

Jon,

Yeah, the AK is one of the great rifles of the last century. I've shot a few of them of different makes, but being a "NATO" type person I own arms that chamber ammo readilly accessable (i.e. 5.56, 7.62, .45, 9mm etc). Never been in the market for an "Eastern Block" firearm.

It'll be pretty hard to find one since they banned importation a couple of years ago.

There are two very well made NIB AK47s from Russia that have just started to be imported called the Saiga II and the Vepr II. They take 30 round mags and have a pistol grip stock. The Saiga II rifles I've seen have been very nicely done, but were around $500.

HTH,
Gino

Everyone, thanks for the info,

Saiga II ehhh??? Hmmm...I'm a pretty cautious buyer. When I know what I want, I KNOW what I want!;)
Figured that would be the last time I handled an AK that I liked.
Yeah, I'm glad that wooden furniture is suppose to heat up quickly, I was beginning to think the Romanians picked up a lesson from Olympic Arms...
Schmidt. Hate to admit it, but I'm sorta the same way, 5.56, 7.62, .45 (I had a HP-35 but I "traded" it).
The only real reason I'm intertested in the AK is that I own two of the more popular rifles of the mid to late 20th century and I was looking to add the third, even if it was built by slave labor.
Maybe this is just the guy above telling me that a FN-FAL and an AR-15 are good enough!
Maybe it's also someone trying to tell me that this house is going to leave me with empty pockets for about a year and I should just enjoy the firearms I already own.

Still learning,
Jon
