Scavanger hunt. Maybe?

As some of you may have read on the handgun forum, my father recently died and left a gun in the safe. Questions about that gun led me here. Which by the way everyone has been very helpful with and thanks again. But, yesterday I found another gun locked up in the basement with his percision tool and die maker tools. They've been locked up on his basement work bench since he retired in 85 although the gun isn't that old. No one knows anything about the gun or how he came to get it. I'm guessing he helped someone out with some cash, but I really don't know. Anyway, I was just looking at the second gun again, Ruger, 22/45 MK III Target, and there are some keys with the gun. 2 Ruger and a Taurus. I didn't notice different keys the first time. Should I now be looking for a third gun? Mom wasn't happy when he got the first gun, so I'm guessing that's why the second gun--maybe more?-- was a secret and not in the safe with the first.

What else are we going to find out? lol

The 22/45 is a relatively new model, and the "target" model would have been a recent purchase. (Last 5 years, or so.)

Yes. If there is a Taurus key attached to the Ruger keys.... you should be looking for more firearms.

You're right FrankenMauser. Found an odd revolver by Taurus called the Judge that shoots both 45's and 410 shotgun shells. Looked it up on the internet, and although they make a number of different models of this gun, this is the original and it's serial #51. He had it hid away in his old army trunk, and again, it looks as though it was never used. We're beginning to think that he was buying these new himself and just not telling anyone. Mom's not a fan of guns. She doesn't have anything against guns. She has has a problem with spending money.

I've decided to keep the Ruger. Even looked into a scope for the gun. I don't know, they cost a heck of a lot more then the gun is worth. Maybe? I'm curious about the Taurus though. Does the low derial number, 51, add anything to the value?

Thanks again.

Edit, Does anyone know if the police can tell me how many permits he had? I can take in the death certificate.

The Ruger is a good pistol. Keeping it will not be a bad decision.

The Judge probably doesn't have a low serial number. Taurus uses three-letter prefixes in their serial numbers. Those prefix letters change frequently, so the number "51" comes up often enough to not get the attention of most shooters.

Don, where do you live? Depending on the state/city where you live, your dad may not have even needed a permit to buy any of his guns - just to have gone through the NICS background check at the gunshop.

Thanks KingGabby, I looked the ser # up, and the info was, Your Model Is 2-441049T, Production Year 2006. The gun predates the current model which is 4510 and also predates being called "The Judge." This is information I weened from Wikipedia. I'm going to send an email to Taurus to see if there is anymore info they can give me on the gun. A friend did tell me that 00051 probably doesn't mean too much with a newer gun, but that is just his off hand opinion and really doesn't know.

Horseman308, my father lived in Michigan, and it turns out he has one more handgun around here somewhere, another S&W, an M500. From what the officer had to say, I can't for the life of me figure out what or why he would ever had an interest in this particular gun. Dad was never someone to have something for the sake of having it. This has us all wondering what was going on. His last 5 years were not his best, but this is off the scale. Not that any of it matters, I hope he enjoyed himself, but it's a side of him we never saw or were let in on.

I have decided to keep the 22/45, mark III. There's a Cabella's close by, and they have a BSA combination laser, scope and light on sale for $100, normally $170. Any opinions on this?

I also watched a couple of youtube videos on this gun, and many were of the shooter shooting with a silencer. ??? I don't know much about guns, but I thought for sure silencers with up their with fully automatic guns as darn hard to be allowed to own. Am I wrong about this?

Thanks again everyone. You've been a big help.

KingGabby, Very true, but I wish he'd have shared a little more about this. I guess he needed something that was his alone and this was it. It would be nice to know why he made the choices he did? Specially since he never fired the guns, or asked to be taken to a range to shoot them. Obviously he got something out of just having them. Good for him. He had earned it.

I had the 22/45 bull barrel with target sights... That thing was LETHAL even with my less than recent eyeglass script on rabbits to 60 yards (with a porch rail as a rest) on the first shot... EVERY TIME I DID MY PART!!!

I tried to find the rate of fire that exceeded the cycling capability of the pistol...
Deputies showed up to inquire if I had full auto arms fired on my property as a complaint had come in. They were like school boys in a giggle fest when i showed them the source of the noise the report was caused by.

I could hold the gun in my right hand and "fan" the trigger with my left hand... Never got a jam...

I modded the pistol to do away with the "mag disconnect" and the "loaded chamber indicator" which are both capable of imparting poor trigger feel and less than perfect trigger consistency as well as removing friction and moving parts...

Thanks for the response Hotdogs. Except for some complaints about taking the gun apart, I haven't read anything unkind about the gun. I'm looking forward to shooting it tomorrow.

So long as you are not a criminal, and live in a state that has not banned them; full-auto weapons and/or suppressors ("silencers") are quite easy to own (as well as other NFA items).

Don V, This forum has all the info you need for the 22/45... EXCELLENT TUTORIALS from simple field strip to full tear down and all the mods...

Just take a peek at the stickies in this section...

This is your go to starting page...

The guy "Bullseye" was one if not THEE one who pointed out the danger of an all metal "loaded chamber indicator" device as it could set off a round if impacted smartly enuff.

HE KNOWS THESE PISTOLS WELL!!!

When I sold mine, the feller wanted it returned to "as delivered" condition so I still have my "modded" flat washer you need to do away with the mag disconnect.

IMHO, the only folks needing a mag disco device are those likely to be in close quarters battle where the opponent may reach for the gun and ability to disable it by dropping the mag would be good...

Also, you must insert a mag to drop the hammer for field strip process... That goes against my upbringing so disabling the mag disco fixed that for me.
And lastly, I want all my weapons to work like a single shot if I need it to.

For instance, I lost the mag to my .22 rifle in a roll over SUV crash in '07 and ain't replaced it yet...;)

FrankenMauser, I'm not a criminal or felon so I guess I just had bad information. Things have changed though. Not to long ago a concealed carry license was not easy to get. You had to have a darn good reason to need one before it was given out. Now, as long as your record is clean, almost anyone can get one.

Hotdogs, thank you for the links. Didn't realize there was more here then the forums. My bad. Mag Disco? I have no idea what you mean by that one. I don't have the language down yet.

Thanks again everyone.

Don

mag disco = magazine disconnect link...

A linkage that disables the gun when the magazine is released.

Brent

Not a "my bad" at all...;)

Just sharing info gleaned to someone who can use it now.

Someone shared it with me when I got a 22/45...

Brent

Again Hotdogs, thank you for the info. And again, everyone has been great with dealing with a novice. It really is appreciated. Not everyone is as patient.
